drew levinson has the latest from college state, p.a., where a sex scandal is rocking that university. >>> reporter: penn state football coach joe paterno is retiring at the end of the season. he says, this is a tragedy. it is one of the great sorrows of my life. with the benefit of hindsight, i wish i had done more. >> reporter: paterno relayed the news to his players this morning. >> this is the first time i have seen him cry and i almost cried myself. >> reporter: many questioned why paterno didn't go straight to police in 2002 when a student assistant told him he saw former assistant coach jerry sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a campus shower. paterno passed the information to higher ups as the law requires. the school's board of trustees is expected to appoint a special committee to find out who is responsible for not calling police immediately after the allegations surfaced. the board meets friday and pennsylvania's governor and former attorney general will be there. >> he who preys on a child is the worst type of person in the world as far as i'm concerned. >> reporter: s

fox 5's wisdom martin live in state college p.a. to show us how students are reacting to what allegedly happened to children at the hand of that penn state coach. >> reporter: tonight was about the victims. students gathered here tonight for about an hour and a half. they left just a short time ago. these students were able to organize an event in support of the victims through word of mouth, twitter and facebook. here's what it looked like a short time ago when we were up close and personal with these students. thousands of students came here from all over campus with candles, with their penn state white, penn state blue on. there was a band here. they had speakers. it was a major accomplishment for the students. we asked why they decided to do this. the students say the focus has been about football and joe paterno and the campus leadership, about who did what and who did not do. what so tonight they wanted to make sure that the focus was on the victims of this horrible tragedy. we had a chance to speak with a state organization a

nbc's peter alexander live on campus tonight, state college, p.a. peter, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening to you. tonight penn state tells nbc news that jerry sandusky has been barred from university facilities. this is one of the details in the shocking sexual abuse case. he's supposed to be the prosecution's star witness, but there are new questions tonight about whether mike mcqueary alerted authorities after allegedly witnessing former assistant coach jerry sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the shower in 2002. the grand jury report says mcqueary was never questioned by university police. but in an e-mail obtained by the associated press, mcqueary told a friend last week, i did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police. tonight the university tells nbc news, we have no record of any police report filed by mike mcqueary. this is the first we have heard of it. on tuesday, mcqueary described his emotions to cbs news. >> all over the place, just kind of shaken. >> crazy? >> crazy. >> yo
