palm springs picked up almost 3 1/4. average rainfall for the entire year in palm springs is just over 4 1/2 inches. they almost got that in the space of about 48 hours. los angeles, almost 2 1/2 inches, just short of 2 inches of rainfall in san diego. some of the more exceptional amounts, almost a foot of rain in the mountains above palm springs and other amounts in at 6 to 8-inch range, which is just way too much water in a short amount of time, especially onto a landscape that is not equipped to absorb 10% of this amount of rain in such a short period of time. even death valley picked up over 2 1/4 inches of rain. hilary is now a post tropical storm, continues to move farther and farther to the north, still that moisture associated with it wrapping around and interacting with the remnants of a different tropical system, eugene, giving some scattered showers to the bay area, which has been obviously quite a bit lighter than they experienced in southern california. a lot of thunderstorms heading into the foothills of th

fox weather nicole valdez is live in palm springs how things are shaping up there. what are the conditions where you are? >> sandra, the mess you see behind me, one example of how intense of flooding we got here across the coachella valley. this bridge moves over one of the many washes that tends to fill up when you have even a half inch of rain. you look at it now, it's clear it was once a raging river. you can tell just how high the water got at one point during the most intense portion of what was tropical storm hilary sunday afternoon into the evening hours, one of the many reasons why city officials went and gone ahead and shut down so many of these major roads trying to keep drivers from getting swept away in those rushing waters. we'll show you some video of what we are seeing today, other roads still seeing as some significant strong currents moving through, so we have a lot of roads that are still shut down today despite most of the rain having moved out of the southern california area. but one area that is going to continue to cause some major problems is

is the position right now, moving northward of the san diego area, pounding palm springs -- palm springs and a huge portion of the central part of southern california with soaking, drenching rain as it continues its progress north during the evening hours, by 11:00 tonight, it's likely to have crossed over the border into western nevada, taking with it the flooding rains that it has produced already, and by 11:00 p.m. tomorrow, it will be moving farther north into parts of southeastern oregon and southwestern idaho. the excessive rainfall from the storm you can see in san diego and areas around it expecting to see 7-10 inches of rainfall, all the way into southern nevada, receiving 3-5 inches of rain. the rain output from the storm is amazing. and pushing along, i want to show you what the minimal effect is -- it will have on the bay area. our forecast starting at midnight tonight will see scattered light showers tomorrow morning, and perhaps more widespread, lighter moderate showers. in the afternoon hours, downpours from the central valley, the closest that is likely to come to the bay

i grew up down here in palm springs. i've never seen it this bad.t five a path of destruction. tonight the latest on cleanup efforts across southern california after the state's first tropical storm in decades slammed many communities right now

about a foot of rain above palm springs. death valley, wow, 2.3 inches of rain in one day. that's about what they get in a year. we'll be looking for things to dry out and they'll continue to be cleaning up. some major cities, these are all records. l.a., two and a half. san diego 1.82. palm dale above the grapevine, 3.93 in the high desert. but it's out and moved quickly at least. the tropical storm is moving about 25 miles an hour by the time it entered southern california. so it didn't linger. the longer it lingered, the more rain would have fallen. and we got plenty. if you look at the temperature anomaly, you will notice that the high pressure continues to bake the southeast even as we continue cool for the next couple days. tomorrow we'll be in the 80s but we will have a warming trend in the bay area. the time lapse here as we look ahead into tuesday afternoon, slowly will be going to mostly sunny skies. so we are looking for clearer weather. we are looking for things to warm up. rain chances, a little bit tomorrow but not much. then we'll pretty much dry it up as we

palm springs i know announced a number of road closures.you have any idea on the scope of the damage at this point? >> at this time our roads teams are just going out to really assessment the sun is just coming up here. we do have all of our entries into palm springs other than one are closed. it is a really big impact right now. it's not just palm springs. it's the entire coachella valley. interstate i-10 is closed in a portion towards the east valley. this is really important and the cleanup process is going to take quite some time. obviously priorities will have to be made in terms of which roads open first. >> has everybody stayed safe? >> overall, yes. i have been in communication with our desert regional medical center which is a level one trauma center. they say things are moving quite well there. there are things moving in, but nothing they can't handle. we haven't heard of any fatalities related to the storm. we have had several swift water rescues and have been helping out neighboring cities. we're very well prepared. i'm grateful

trees here on main street in palm desert. the center of hillary is now coming through. the winds are their worst. they've been all day. and this entire street is just littered with debris. >> many people got ready filling sandbags and stocking up on supplies, hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. crews have built large sand berms along the beach to protect the coast from massive waves, though some people are hoping to take advantage of the high surf. and then in the midst of the storm, these lights swaying as los angeles was hit by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake. >> chief, i'm really sorry to interrupt you right now. our our studio is shaking right now, so not only are we dealing with a tropical storm, but it appears we are now dealing with an earthquake. >> this is the first time we've had a magnitude five since 1932. in exactly this location. >> there were no reports of any damage or injuries from the quake. and experts say it was not related to the severe weather. alex stone, abc news in los angeles. >> severe dren

one of the worst hit areas, palm springs. take a look at this drone video of the aftermath. miles and miles and miles of road covered in mud with crews trying to clear the mess and power is still out in many areas. and then there is this video from cathedral city. crew his to get creative. they used bulldozers to get to a dozen people trapped by mud three to five feet high. firefighters ended up putting them in a front loader and driving them to higher ground. palm springs only gets about four or five inches of rain in a year and parts of coachella valley got anywhere from 2-6 just this weekend. >> i am digging around the truck right now. we got stuck. we got stuck. we were trying to come through here. we seep the rest of the cars make it. we joined the line. >> reporter: a number of drivers spent the day digging their vehicles out. here is a look at that in action there is video of a truck racing down a hill in san bernardino county the debris damaged two bridges. >> we set up sandbags over the weekend thinking it would be sufficient but it blew right through them. >> bould

time out this flood threat for us. >> reporter: the center is coming through the palm springs, palm desert area. we had winds gusting over 30 miles per hour, all sorts of debris from these palm trees littering the streets. roads are blocked because of heavy rain and fallen trees as a moderately strong tropical storm is coming through the deserts of southern california. something i have never experienced. we have flash flood warnings up for this area, parts of l.a. as well. a very high risk of seeing more flash flooding and some mudslides across much of the interior of southern california. another 4 to 6 inches of rain potentially in some of these mountainous areas. that's going to do some damage. heat across the midsection of the country, flood watches all the way to the northwest, where we hope to get some of the rain to the washington state fires but i'm afraid very little wit get there. >> linsey: we move now on to other news. deadly wildfires scorching washington state. firefighters are battling three major fires. the governor has declared a state of emergency. the fast moving wildfire
