right, pam? i mean, i think it's-it's not only to get them to understand recovery and addiction, etc., and the whole continuum, but really to get them to be supportive and not to give up. that's right. so many times families, by the time they're interested in learning about this, are already dealing with a family member who has disrupted the family, who they've had to separate from, who has turned up homeless, and they're very worried about them or any other way in which the family feels assaulted by that process. so it's really important for them to get hope, it's really important for them to understand that things can be better, it's important to understand that they can get some support as family members. so all of these things are critical, and frankly there is no better advocate than a convinced family member for treatment programs, for science, for all of the things, for people than family members. and what type of resources are out there, tom and pam and alexandre and james, for individual

pam?l, i think the conversation we had a little bit earlier about medication-assisted treatment goes along with this, because the more we understand the biological nature of addiction, and we're learning more and more through research about what chemicals happen in the brain and why this happens to some folks and not others, but it helps us understand the diseased process of this. so whether it's a medication that assists-assists that process or whether it is a mutual self-help approach or whether it is frankly-some people go through natural approaches, some people use ... or spontaneous. or spontaneous. some people use nontraditional approaches, like acupuncture, yoga, or meditation. some people use all of those. and i think not only is the path to addiction pretty individualized, but the path to recovery is very much individualized as well. if i may add to what pam just said, addiction is-has been said thus far, more than substance use, it's a biological disease, but it's also a conditio

let's go back to dave and pam. >>> thank you. san francisco police want your help this morning solving a homicide. ktvu tara moriarty is live out there right now with new details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we are hearing from published reports the victim was not a customer inside of the coffee shop but he had been running from the suspect and ducked inside the cafe to try to hide. we are here in front of city hall which is a few blocks from where it happened. police need witnesses to step forward to crack this case. the shooting happened in broad daylight around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. investigators say someone entered the cafe and opened fire shooting and killing a 25- year-old man. detectives say the victim was shot several times and some reports indicate he was shot in the head. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police are not sure what sparked the shooting. the victim was targeted. the suspect ran away after firing his weapon. just to give you an idea of the neighborhood we're talking about. it

i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. we want to update you on this  big overnight news from the san mateo county coast. right now emergency crews are still closely watching that 65- foot fishing boat that is filled with thousands of gallons of diesel fuel. it is still rocking in the rough waters of half-moon bay state beach. that's where ktvu's jade hernandez has been talking to emergency crews this morning. jade. >> reporter: well, that's right. we've been able to give you a pretty good update every half hour. we just spoke to this boat's owner who told us he didn't want to go on camera but that he could tell us the captain of this vessel right here was his son and that the three men on board are all right this morning. the owner is worried about the fishing boat. it's worth about $400,000. the biggest concern for the u.s. coast guard this morning is any kind of diesel fuel spill. the coast guard is monitoring the situation and that's who we've also been touching base with about every 30 minutes. the boat right now is
