ktvu's pam cook is in our news room with today's report and the urging from one congressman. unemployment rate dropped in december. that news may sound encouraging at first, but economists say it is misleading. employers added 74,000 jobs in december, which is the worst monthly number in nearly 3 years and well below what economists forecast. the unemployment rate dropped to 6.7%. but again, that is due to ashing work force. now, a record 91.8 million people are not participating in the work force, meaning they have given up looking for a job. that also means they are not counted in the unemployment rate. the official jobless rate includes only those people it actively searching for a new job. now, economists say a broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged and underemployed workers is more than 13%. now, weather did play a role in some of the problems for december. this morning's report says 273,000 people were not able to work because of the cold temperatures across the country in december. that is above the 5 year average. many of those jobs are in constructi

[ laughter ] i see really cold temperatures. coldest air since 1996 is set to plunge into parts of the great lakes. it looks really cold at lambeau. zero to start off and minus six to minus eight at the second half. for us it looks like nothing we have seen before. there is a few high clouds. 30s to 40s and 50s on the low. 50 in san francisco. there is is still a component of an easterly breeze. a little low off the coast. high pressure inland doesn't like it so it fills with a slight breeze. another mostly sunny day. highs 60 to 70 degrees. here is sal. >>> i want to let you know about this fatal crash in daly city. san francisco area. southbound 280 year the john daly boulevard right in this area here. between john daly boulevard and the exit there at the brotherhood way exit. i think we have a live picture of the scene. these are live pictures of the scene. of this crash involving

it is friday, january 17th i'm pam cook. >> it is definitely friday. good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. rosemary is here for steve. >>> yes. tgif to you. another mild day in store. if you are getting out this morning you may need the winter coat. it is below freezing. napa checking in at 43. upper 30s for you livermore. mid 30s in walnut creek. and around the bay upper 30s. 49 in san francisco. 43 half-moon bay with mostly clear skies. san jose you're at 41 degrees. i want to head north for just a moment. take a look at the chilly temperatures. take a look at calistoga. all week we've been talking about very dry conditions. very warm conditions. and the heightened fire danger. this reporting station is above 1,000 feel. this is in the hills of calistoga. 52-degrees so there it is your proof it is very dry out there and in the over night hours no recovery for our hills. so we will continue with this dry weather as you get into your afternoon today. it is a cold start into the north bay. as we get into the afternoon temperatures will feel quiet nice.

[ laughter ] aye been lookings at it. it looks pretty quiet. it looks very mild to warm. we are starting with an offshore breeze. that will take us through tonight and even tomorrow and possibility of record highs. there could be a few today. kentfield and st. helena definitely flirting. north to east breeze and that means windy conditions. higher elevations mainly taking the brunt of it. that will take us through tonight. probably tonight and maybe tomorrow. oakland though when you get that pattern starting off 45 downtown oakland will be close to 70 degrees today. 52 walnut creek. 53 in oakland. there are temps that are pretty mild to warm. it wouldn't take much. you can see that offshore breeze. 16 miles an hour. it will be clear and sunny and nice and breezy. warming up here pretty fast. back to a dry forecast. maybe for awhile. maybe for the rest of the month. 60s to 70 degrees.
