beth parker has the story. >> reporter: these crews back behind me are already working on a temporary fix. take a look. you can see they're putting wood and steel across the caps of the pillars and that is the first step of re-enforcing the see. the crews are hammering out a temporary solution to this. look closely. there are cracks in the cement on maryland's $5.2 billion entercounty connector. >> and that is a brand-new road. >> reporter: the ribbon was cut this past february. >> wow, that is actually amazing. i don't understand how you spend all of that money, you know, and i am sure plenty of that money was spent on engineering and now, wow. that is just -- that blows my mind, actually. >> reporter: belinda peters is the director of the icc project. >> that is a disappointing thing for the team to find. >> reporter: between 40 and 50 hairline cracks were found during a final inspection. >> when we identified a series of them on all of these similar types of piers, we went back and asked the engineer to do another review to determine if there was a broader issue. >> reporter: peter
