parkway on to the spout run parkway. and that's going to be the case here for a little while longer. now, within this last 15 or 20 minutes or so however we did see a truck loaded with sand arrive here on the scene. that sand is going to be used to mop up the oil spill that is further down the road. that's what's causing the problem here. overnight, there was a car that had a problem with their engine th and metal debris across the northbound lanes of the g.w. parkway. that's why it's closed. take a look at the map here. you'll get a better idea for the trouble spot, the area that's close. we're talking about spout run and the cia exit. not sure exact he how much longer it will be closed. but they are making some progress. they have got some additional crews and some equipment here on the scene so hopefully we'll start to see some relief at some point soon. right now, all of those northbound lanes are closed. the detour -- spout run. wither moe on traffic, let's send it over to melissa. >> thank you, megan. again, right

all of suit land parkway is back open right now. let's check in with megan mcgrath on who left the scene of the crash before the police arrived. megan? >> reporter: well, police have just wrapped up things here on the scene and they have given us an update on what happened. traveling inbound and witnesses say that volvo was traveling very, very fast. there was a chrysler headed outbound on suitland parkway and they were trying to take a left on to firth sterling and the cars smashed into each other in the intersection. now, the striking car, the driver got out and ran away. and police are still looking for that driver. there was a passenger in that striking car. they also tried to run, but didn't get very far. >> the passenger in the vehicle who tried to flee as well. and he was -- he didn't make it far because of his injuries. he had a weapon on him, loaded weapon. he was placed under arrest. he's not the driver we're looking for. >> reporter: and the chrysler struck, four people were inside. one person died and they are still look

our meagan fitzgerald is along that parkway with a report. meagan? >> reporter: you can see the northbound lane is finally moving steadily. it is that south bound lane dealing with traffic there. but this close adieu sneak challenge because the national coast guard -- the national park service telling me they not only had to call in the hazmat crew but the u.s. coast guard because the oil seeped down seven different drains. late wednesday night into thursday afternoon on the gw park was way nothing short of headache. >> oil was spread on both lanes of the northbound parkway after charter bus has engine failure. >> reporter: engine la roca chief of staff for the parkway. sand was used to sop up the oil but some of it had already made its way down seven different drains, which requires more time and more extensive cleanup process. >> we are working with the coast guard and the hazmat contractor to contain that to make sure it doesn't spread. >> reporter: officials say the oil made its way into tributaries that eventually feed into the potomac, so while
