cnn's nick paton walsh was with the troops and joins us now from dnipro.> reporter: john, no doubt, the ukrainians accept this is slow and hard fighting, but they are certainly making progress. in the village we saw recaptured yesterday, it was the place that just about two weeks ago the russians dug into to shell the ukrainians from. a sense of definite achievement amongst them, but also hard losses in fighting. there may be ruin around them, but the direction is forward. we're with the 35th ukrainian marines, the first to get to the outskirts of this village. just down here, another counteroffensive. we are just seeing the neighboring village taken last week. with that much incoming, we're getting out of here as quick as we can, while they control urozhaine, the russians do everything they can to make it a nightmare for the ukrainians to be there. the unit showed us the intense fight captured by drone. this is their tank advancing, dropping a string of anti-mine explosives behind it, which, once it turned, detonated. the unit released a video of them in

nick paton walsh has more. >> reporter: some suggests that we may be seeing programs to get f-16s to after the last 48 hours. denmark saying they will begin training for the pilots in the next 13 days possibly or so. the netherlands also on board with that. it was european allies of ukraine that will be doing the training in europe. after that, the americans would assist in the supply of jets to ukraine. it's a complex situation because the americans had to sign off on the training equipment. all that paperwork appears to be dealt with now and they're moving forward. it's going to take months. these are complex pieces of equipment that require numbers of english speaking ukrainian pilots to be taken to foreign countries. it was always a significantly ambitious project by nato to provide this air capability to ukraine. it's urgently needed. there are ukrainian troops dying daily on the southern front because of rush air superiority. it's an exceptionally important part of ukraine's potential future arsenal. it will not be arriving this year. at the same time there's been some criticis

cnn's nick paton walsh has been with the troops on the front lines. >> reporter: the fight is so fierce and the victory so bitter there is very little of the tiny four-road village and the full tloting of the counter offensive. so small, and symbolic that russia claimed monday that it had pushed ukraine out of it monday. and these men are fresh back from that fight. kre kcre crevasse, the call sign, fought all ten days until the russians fled. here he is with the shells raining around in advance of the fight. when you assault under enemy shelling, he says, you have nowhere to hide, and that's the hardest part. they have since tried to assault again with smaller groups. he fought here near the town before it where the russians hid 200 troops in the basement and not even leaving for the toilet, and so ukraine attacked ed with smaller force. he went to where the russians made a final stand, and the school held in the corridors, and there is no love says the wolf. and there is nothing they relish and left no clues as to why they fought. one to hard things for the ukrainians to understand is

nick paton walsh joins us from dnipro.ukraine and where you are as well. >> reporter: yeah, these incidents overnight in odesa, another example of russia's bid to try to cause significant trouble towards that important southern coastal city. it appears that 15 of the drones didn't manage to get intercepted, some caliber missiles may have managed to get through, but it's the yekend's toll on civilians that have proven particularly shocking. you mentioned there in kherson region down towards the black sea a village there where a family were hit as part of shelling that claimed seven lives in total, a 23-day-old baby owe fae, her 12-year-old brother and the mother and father were part of the dead there as well. as pressure continues to mount on ukraine on its southern front it does appear russia is perpetually trying to get some sort of retaliation against civilian populations. the strikes in odesa causing an enormous con if. ligration. the weekend strikes quite shocking. >> nick paton walsh, thank you for you and your crew b

cnn's nick paton walsh joins us now. nick, fill us in here. why has the black sea suddenly become this major focal point? >> reporter: yeah, and totally unexpected, especially from moscow. fair to say vladimir putin even has a fancy holiday home sat on the black sea area just down from where yesterday's attack occurred on an amphibious assault ship, and probably not too far away from where the russian fuel cargo ship was indeed hit this morning. that was carrying 5,000 tons -- or can carry 5,000 tons of fuel. apparently nobody ended up on that. yesterday's attack against the amphibious ship involved 100 people on board. the point here, jim, is these parts of the black sea are supposed to be way out of ukraine's range. they're suppose to be the safe backwaters that russia could move its shapes to away from exposed areas around crimea. instead day after day we're seeing instances in which ukrainian drones, perhaps traveling hundreds of miles, are in fact coming straight into military vehicles, important parts of russian military infrastructure.

cnn's nick paton-walsh joins us now. just getting out of afghanistan to pakistan is a trial for many afghans, cost them a lot of money. so now some who managed to get out are being sent home? is this pakistan who is doing this? >> reporter: to some degree. but ultimately had the u.s. process moved fast enough that it was able to get the people that they promised, who'd worked for the united states, risked their lives at times working for the u.s. military, if they made good on their promise fast enough to get them to the united states, then pakistan's actions would be frankly less relevant. what we've seen over the past months or weeks is pakistan cracking down on afghans with improper illegal paperwork who are essentially part of the wave of the afghans that fled afghanistan when the taliban took over to neighboring pakistan seeking shelter. initially there was pakistan welcoming them, and i think as time has gone by that is often seen with refugee populations, that welcome has eroded slowly to the point now where we sp
