if the bible did preach patriotism or teach patriotism, it's a militant patriotism. one of the things that we cannot ignore going forward is the militancy of scripture. that is something we really have to come to terms with. one of my favorite sections of professor george morrison's book on jonathan edwards, he makes a comment -- he is one of my other kinds of interesting favorite people to read. and i don't agree with everything he says and all the images that he preached but jonathan edwards lived in a world and the world that he lufd in was very much like the world that we see in lord of the rings and star wars. just this idea that we're in this kind of enchanted world and it's good versus evil. that what we see in our daily life is not just what we see. there is more to it than that. st there is good versus evil everywhere. and we're always in had the midst of it. and it's a very meaningful struggle. i think we have to remember that. i think that has to be part of that. part of new understanding of this time and understanding scripture. that's where we get the mi

i don't know what my position would have been, if i would have been a patriot or a loyalist. he resigned from the continental congress and became a loyalist. he was opposed to violent revolution, for sure, and he lost everything he had. he ended up having to live in a swamp in south carolina for a while. he lost his church, all his property, everything. why? because he was acting in accord with his conscience and what he saw going on in romans. it's debatable whether he is absolutely right about that interpretation, but that's a good sign. and you do see instances like that where people will act according to their conscience, even to the point of great personal loss. i find those kinds of examples really inspiring. it's like today. in the time of the founding, you do have people using these scripture as window dressing. they are not being insincere, but it's not as if they are paying any kind of price of conscience to cite the bible for this or that purpose, and probably what that tells us most often is the bible is the language everybody knew how to speak. >> part of what is
