plus he was really hitting patty murray throughout this campaign very hard. on the whole issue of earmarks. he made a pledge that he would not do earmarks if he got into the senate. murray had to defend herself on all of these things. you know, but he's been very strong, conservative republican in the sense that he's, you know, not going earmarks. the jobs and the economy. so i think because the democrats are struggling elsewhere she's been feeling that as well. the other thing, it's been a nasty campaign. the ads here have really ugly. today there was a report in the herald that they talked to the people from i believe it was the sunlight foundation which tracks spending throughout the country. and 20 million dollars in outside money was poured in to by independent groups into this race. president obama came here. michelle obama came here. so they want to hold that seat. >> woodruff: thank you for joining us from kctf in seattle. thanks very much. >> you bet. >> woodruff: we're going to go right now to jim. >> lehrer: house republican leader john boehner has

patty murray is ahead of her republican challenger, dino rossi, but just a slim margin with a little more than half the vote in. this morning, we're told that both parties are planning on recounts. they expect it could be third, even friday before they know who won this election because it is so razor thin. this could last a few more days here. >> thank you. it will last longer even up in alaska. neal karlinsky is there. >> reporter: what an incredible race out here. in the lead is something called "write in." the lisa murkowski camp believes that is her. under alaska state law, there is 15 days before all of the write-in ballots are opened. where officials see if they're lisa murkowski, and if they're spelled correctly. there are expected to be a lot of challenges to the write-in votes. still, lisa murkowski is confident. she thinks she has the first write-in victory since 1954. that's also the last time the giants won the series. though in a different city. >> i'm sure the folks out west appreciate that, neal. thank you. >>> and in colorado, michael bennet and ken buck are neck and

with a race that's got patty murray ahead by 50.5, might take her just as long to figure out her fate as well. in if alaska, you can count that as a safely republican seat. scott mcadams finished in third place. joe miller or lisa murkowski will be the state senator. i want to talk about the exit polls that we saw last night, and this entire swing, this 60-seat landslide that we saw came after only about a seven-point shift in the electorate. men shifted towards republicans by just nine points, women just by six points across the country. whites were the largest swing. in 2008 only 45% of whites voted for republicans. this year 60% of whites voted for republicans, a 15-point swing. but across the rest of the dem graphics it's pretty even -- demographics, it's pretty even. seven points among white evangelicals, seven points among the non-white evangelicals. a little higher, 11 points among those who live in rural areas. what that really tells you is this thing was across party lines, it was across economic lines, across really all social lines as well. so the landslide here was truly,
