standing with him were lindsey graham, standing with him was ted cruz. rand paul wanted it different. yes, i'll give you money if you find it somewhere else in the budget to cut it. >> my amendment increases defense spending but pays for it with spending cuts. it is irresponsible and dangerous to continue to put america further into debt. we need a strong national defense but we should be honest with the american people and pay for it. >> so we will watch the four senators and see when there's areas of agreement, when there are areas of disagreement. that was one interesting area there. we've talked a little bit before about rand paul's interesting race on national security. they had to vote. democrats know not only do you have presidential candidates on the floor, you have a number of republican senators in 2016 who are in blue states or battleground states. what i found interesting is there was a proposal to get paid sick leave in the budget. all four of the presidential candidates, rand paul, marco rubio, ted cruz, lindsey graham vote no. there was a proposal t

remember, you've got several candidates in the senate rand paul marco rubio lindsey graham, ted cruz. they're going to have to accommodate themselves to the even chule shape of a budget. and you've got this intense split between the john mccain and lindsey graham faction that wants to substantially increase defense spending and those who don't. they are still going to have to pass spending bills and those would happen independently. >> what happens to the sequester? everybody agreed that wasn't a great way to go about it. >> remember that we had the ryan murray budget deal a couple of years ago which increased the sequester caps? but that expire this is year. and what that means is the caps take effect and the relief that the pentagon and domestic programs got from that earlier deal goes away. that's why the defense hawks are so upset about it. president o bottoma proposed raise -- presidents obama proposed raising the caps for defense. the republican approach is we'll raise it for budget and decrease medicare. gwen: something that will reverberate on the campaign trail. we end tonigh

contenders for president have signed onto that letter including senator ted cruz marco rubio, rand paul and lindsey grahams are this letter. we've seen a fierce defense by these senators after this controversy ensued. they believe this was the right strategy. here's senator marco rubio. >> this is an unusual moment with an incredible risk to the world and our country and the region and it required unusual methods to deal with it. i would send another one tomorrow. i think the risk of a nuclear iran is so great that we need to do everything possible to keep us from finding ourselves in a situation where we'll have a nuclear iran. >> reporter: former secretary of state hillary clinton potential democratic candidate for president is engulfed in this e-mail controversy and yesterday she really took a strong stance in defense of the obama administration and their view on this letter saying that it's out of step with tradition. >> what was the purpose of this letter? there appear to be two logical answers. either these senators were trying to be helpful to the iranians or harmful to the commander in chief in th

lindsey graham once more defense spending. rand paul once less. we got a lot of no comments and nine answers from chris christie and -- black republicans reluctant to take a firm stand? mark: one of the worst things in politics today, when in the major debates of our time, how we should spend our money and what we should cut, and not one of these candidates are actually stepping up and saying here's what i like, here's what i don't like, and why. it's been for the country and the republican party, because they should be strong and brave and take positions. campbell: would you be doing the same thing? what do they have to gain? for hillary clinton, it's all upside. mark: they are going to have to say eventually what they believe in. why not get credit for courage? look at the proposals and say what they like and don't like. i understand the downside. i don't like it one bit. this is a major debate. they should step up and say what they think. campbell: i think they are a long way from having to do it why do it now when they can give you the nonansw

and four potential republican hopefuls signed the letter ted cruz lindsey graham rand paul marco rubio. and seven did not, including the chairman bob corker said to be furious with the letter. what more can you tell us about senator corker's reaction. >> corker is concerned this could disrupt a bipartisan deal he is trying to push through the senate a bill he has done with robert menendez ranking democrat. that would require any iranian deal first get congressional approval. corker was close to getting 67 votes to overturning presidential veto on that particular piece of legislation. what he is worried about is that this letter could undermine those efforts, could make the fight more partisan make it harder to get democrats on board with his effort. that's what he is worried about here. you're hearing that from a handful of republicans who worry that these tactics are not going to work. >> this is a question on what's an acceptable deal. let me lay what senator tom cotton said about what would be considered an acceptable deal. >> the real alternative to a bad deal is a better deal with

that list would include if you believe what you read in the papers, rand paul of kentucky, marco rubio of florida, maybe lindsey graham of south carolina, are they going to apologize or run on their willingness to sign this letter? >> i think they're going to run on the letter. you know, i want a nuclear deal with iran. i think they do too. but we want a good deal that stops iran from getting a nuclear weapon. that gets rid of its heavy water plant and other things and i think that's the message they'll say on the campaign trail. >> do you really think that's in the cards, telling a country that it simply can't have any sentry centrifugeif it wants them? >> the only reason iran wants to operate the certain number of centrifuges -- we should not be playing this game with the iranians. they have to stop this enrichment program with them or they're not going to have a deal with them. >> observing diplomatic niceties is not something you do at a time like this when we're on the verge of increasing the amount of danger in the world by allowing iran to move ahead where a nuclear program. >> this is not about diplomatic nice

pauls, the ted cruzs? i think ted was at aipac yesterday from hillary clinton. >> i administration for5n graham and john bolton, former bush administration official talking about getting into the race to counter rand paul and his world view. >> interestingly among the names, there's been buzzfeed, for instance, compiling some of the -- some would say random guests today. alan dershowitz, michelle bachmann, mary hart of "entertainment tonight," pat boon, among others. of course, the house speaker spokesman said, quote, if taylor swift and katy perry did a joint concert at madison square garden wearing white and gold and black and blue dances accompanied by dancing sharks and llamas the only way you would have a tougher ticket. the theater around this is exceptional. >> no question about it. and chuck schumer, democratic senator from new york, said tickets were hotter than latkes. certainly you're going to have all of those 50 seats being surrendered by members of congress. there are multiples of those who would like to come sit in those seats. >> we're continue to watch. i'm trying to draw a line between the th
