dropped in for a look at our forecast with chief meteorologist paul heggen. you are watching the skies, as are the blue angels. two yeah, we have seen them fly by as they practice for tomorrow and they will adjust to whatever font is out there. we are likely to have have some of it around 3:00 in the afternoon. the thick of it will be developing into friday . friday morning. we will show you you that on futurecast in a moment. it will still be mild by by the water, but warm to even hot inland on friday. very summerlike pattern complete with with the june gloom, big temperature swing between england on friday, after most of of next week. that fog will be dissipating but still hanging out right along the coast. we zoom in for a closer look, at san francisco, you can see the fog peaking on through towards treasure island, towards alcatraz as well. this will be the pattern that we are in tomo. in tomorrow. there is a chance the fog is more thin, maybe compact fog, but it would likely likely still be out there, and we are seeing a behind downtown. downtown, only 6

first alert weather meteorologist paul heggen is here. which frontline was this? >> this was a long calaveras fault line . 5.1 is a sizable earthquake. it's big enough to do damage if it's located in a specific spot. this one was located 12 miles to the east of san jose about. so it depends on the precise location. you can see that center of where the earthquake happened, and the follow-up aftershock, 3.1 magnitude, 5.1, the official magnitude. it initially came out as 5.0. they advised morning. >>> let's faults, the fault here intersects the calaveras fault . the san andreas fault runs of the peninsula, and the calaveras fault where this one was located is where we did see that earthquake today. and it was certainly noticeable across much of the bay. it didn't have to be in the immediate proximity, but you do see the brighter colors showing up in the did you feel it map from the usgs, in the santa clara valley. plenty of the bay, even to the north, this was large enough to be felt for a significant distance. we'll talk about that and the weather in a few minutes.

. > >> let's bring in paul heggen to to talk about the climate. coastal firefighters are certainly getting a lot of help from the weather. that does not mean that we don't need them. >> >> things have been okay so far the month of october. we worry about offshore winds, significantly warmer than average temperatures, very dry fire fuels. none of those are major factors at this point. let's take a look at the map. green is good so what we have been seeing through the month or is near average temperatures. even with someone finland it has has not been out of control. and and almost lack of offshore wins plus the rain that we picked up help to provide some moisture. all of the screen indicates note absence of a fire threat, but low for this time of year. morew and red would indicate a much higher threat. this is the pattern we will be in for the rest of the week. the fire danger index combines the different factors that we look . that includes air temperature, y levels, wind speed, dryness. we want to be as close to zero as we can. with the fog, that

. >>> paul heggen has some very good advice, deflate the halloween decorations . >> it is going to bewindy , so you don't want those blowing away. a couple people in our studio have them, like a big vampire, i could just see that floating over the sky in the valley. until it lands on 680, then it becomes significantly less funny. this storm system is moving into the pacific northwest, it'll bring cooler air, it'll draw the cold front through the bay area. this little band of showers making his way toward the california coast but unfortunately the moisture supply is going to be very limited over the bay area, so we are not looking at anything more than a couple of passing sprinkles, maybe some drizzle to begin the day. rain chances over the next several days are sparse. not necessarily zero, an outside chance of a shower tuesday night, another wave will make its way in, a similar outside chance by the end of next week. as we look ahead to november, we want to see some significant rain chances heading our way, but we don't see any sign of that. temperatures today were significantly cool

let's get inside to meteorologist paul heggen. are you feeling for me? >> a little bit. it is cool outside. >> it is crisp. >> which befits the end of october. temperatures down to the mid- 50s in the city. near normal temperatures as we head into the weekend. just some passing clouds overhead saturday. not as much is we saw today. temperatures should return to closer to normal. that is true for most of us on sunday. officer winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere will try to warm us up, but not going to lose the onshore influence at the surface near ground level, which means temperatures are going to be cooler near the water. let's take a look at our rain chances next week. trick-or-treat time is still dry, but we are looking at a decent chance of rain tuesday into tuesday night, continuing wednesday. still lower than a 50/50 chance of rain for any particular spot. but things have been trending in a more favorable direction. hopefully we get some moisture to wetting the vegetation. this is not going to completely put an end to fire season, but every little bit helps

now let's bring in our first alert meteorologist paul heggen. just a few rainy days seem to make a huge difference. > >> there's lies, there's big lies and statistics. and there are lies hidden in it that we had a close to average water year. let's take a look at the numbers. again, if you look at the percentages, it looks like okay, we are pretty close to where we should be. but take the the san francisco number. 16 inches of that. almost all of it it fell in october. november, and december of last year. they went through that very long stretch of dry weather in january, february, march, and most of april. so, if we get close to average rainfall, that is fine. but it has to be spaced spaced out enough throughout the the rainy season to really make a difference in terms of our drought conditions. getting it all at once, we lose the beneficial aspect of getting close to normal rainfall. we hope the upcoming rainy season gives us what we need. but zero precipitation in the forecast for the next several days. high pressure building overhead. not on

. >> paul heggen joins us . are we talking about fire danger with all this rain? >> the wind will have an effect on the fire threat, it'll be higher than it has been recently but it'll not be off the charts. we are looking at the index map beginning tomorrow morning. this is a statistic that combines all the things we look at to evaluate the fire threat, the wind speed, direction, humidity, dryness of the fuel, it usually starts close to zero in the morning, but we are looking at some elevated values developing especially for the north bay by saturday afternoon. the one thing helping us out is the temperatures are not going to be very warm, it'll be a northerly wind bringing cooler air to the bay area. that will help to mitigate the fire threat to some extent. the wind will die down tomorrow night but it'll pick back up again on sunday. another day with an elevated fire threat, shifting more to the east, also into the sacramento valley. and solano county. not a warning yet, but it could be upgraded to that, it is a fire weather watch until 8:00 on sunday. relative

a good time to bring in paul heggen, all of this fog helping but i believe we got the latest route map. where does that stand? >> it's unchanged from last week, which isn't great but considering we haven't seen anyn since mid-september, at least it it hasn't gotten any worse. let's take a look at the situation around the bay area specifically are drought conditions, most of the bay area area in the third worst category category severe drought, just to to the east, that's where there is extreme drought and then the central valley, exceptional drought, that's the worst category on a statewide basis, you can see that area of exceptional drought that represents 17% of the state, almost the entire state 94% in severe drought conditions, coming up on the first anniversary of the extreme atmospheric river event, october october of 2021, we don't have anything like that in the forecast but we do have our first decent chance of showers in october, just beyond the seven day forecast, we are talking about the end of next week and the following weekend, and this is still somewhat speculative, but
