it was video by paul murdaugh of a dog with an injured tale. n hear the other two voices identified by the state as alex murdaugh and maggie murdaugh. paul and maggie murdaugh are believed to have died about 8:49 p.m. this video was taken at 8:45, between 8:44:45 and 8:45:07. the defense has said since this video was first put out that it would be coming at trial. the defense would say they were there, called it a con viv y'all conversation, a friendly conversation, certainly nothing threatening in his voice at the time. the problem for the defense is that alec murdaugh said he was not there. he said he took a nap, went to his mother's house, left the property at 9:06 and returned when he called 911 at 10:07. we could see alec murdaugh in court as this was playing, he was crying hard sitting at the defense table. >> we were watching a little bit of that here. randi, we've been told there's a snapchat video. that's different from the one they released today? can you walk us through that? >> reporter: right. the snapchat video was taken at 7:56 p.

but remember, at trial the state revealed evidence of a video recording extracted from paul murdaugh'swere killed recorded at 8:44 p.m. prosecutor and more than a handful of witnesses say that is alex murdaugh's voice on the recording putting him at the murder scene. and we also see for the first time this bizarre exchange between alex and deputy mcdowell who arrives on the scene. in the middle of talking to sergeant green about his wife, he pauses to greet the deputy. >> maggie murdaugh, margaret murdaugh. how you doing? >> i'm okay. >> reporter: alex also asks the deputies several times if his family is dead. >> did you check? >> did i check what. >> did you check them? >> we have medical guys, that is what they will do. >> they are dead, aren't they? >> yes, sir, that is what it looks like. >> reporter: on some of the body cam video, alex murdaugh is seen pacing around the property, he is making phone calls including one to one of his brothers. >> yeah, the police are here now. police are here now. >> reporter: in another clip he asks the deputies to get his surviving son buster on

these two snapchat videos sent from paul murdaugh, the son's phone, have his voice arguably in the backgroundso the prosecution is relying on that evidence to place alex murdaugh in the location at those kennels. that will bode very badly for murdaugh if the jury hones in on that evidence because of course that shows a consciousness of guilt if alex murdaugh was in fact manufacturing an alibi and this evidence in fact places him at the scene. >> also yesterday this remarkable moment where the defense and prosecution are talking to the judge without the jury present about this testimony, this testimony will alex murdaugh's alleged financial crimes. you have the former cfo of the law firm where he worked saying on the morning of the murders, she confronted him about a whole bunch of missing money. it all happened without the jury present. do you think the jury will end up seeing that testimony knowing about the financial anxllegatio as part of a motive? >> of course the prosecution doesn't have to prove a motive, but juries always want to hear a motive in a murder case. you have the who, what,

one is the woman who performed autopsies of maggie and paul murdaugh. alex murdaugh has pleaded not guilty to their murders. closing arguments are expected to get under way tomorrow. allison barber is outside the courthouse in south carolina for us. what was the prosecution's strategy behind the testimony we've just heard and this came after the defense's experts yesterday, right? >> reporter: right. it's a rebuttal witness. we previously heard from the state's pathologist. she had previously testified, talked about her findings in the autopsy report. then the defense had a pathologist that they brought to the stand yesterday. that pathologist is the one that brought up this two shooter theory, saying that he felt based on his expertise, based on the evidence that he had seen that the most likely scenario here was a two shooter scenario. and in making that argument, he really criticized and questioned the original autopsy report that was done by this state pathologist. so what we saw was her come back on the stand and really push back on some of the poin

first of all n that timeline we know that maggie and paul murdaugh's phones, their cell phones, lockeddefense because eight witnesses have testified that alex murdaugh was at the murder scene around the time of the murders at 8:44 p.m. there was a video extracted from paul murdaugh's cellphone that was recorded at 8:44. he has denied to investigators that he was ever there earlier in the night, not until he found his wife and son dead, but eight people now say they hear his voice on that cellphone recording. we know also from the timeline he left the house at 9:06 p.m., said he went to his mother's home for about an hour, but the caregiver has told the jury that he was only there for about 15 to 20 minutes. that's also a problem. we also know from the timeline the gps data from that data that was released last week that he slowed his car down on the way to his mother's home in the very same area where maggie murdaugh's phone was found in the woods. the state is suggesting that perhaps he slowed down to drop it out the window. also we know he was speeding on the way back, the gps data s

the recording was discovered on paul murdaugh's cell phone months after the murders. and how poorly alex was coping with the murders. >> alex, was he grieving greatly? >> oh, terribly. >> people have described him as being destroyed, is that -- would you agree with that assessment? >> yes. >> and anderson, maggie's sister also testified that maggie and alex had a good relationship. she said it wasn't perfect but that she thought maggie was happy and maggie thought that alex had a problem with pills that maggie nicknamed paul murdaugh the little detective he would go around the house and collect pills that alex had in his possession that hadn't been prescribed to him. as you may recall, alex lawyers blamed an alleged opioid addiction for some of these alleged financial schemes and hod behaviors. but looking ahead to this week, looks as though the state is still expecting to wrap up their case this week and the defense will begin their's. >> appreciate it. thank you. >>> long overdue honor, black vietnam set to receive the highest award medal of honor nearly six decades

on that video paul murdaugh is filming a dog he's showing to his friend. gie and the voice of alec murdaugh. the defense is going to argue that's not him and it's possibly someone else and you can't see him on camera. we haven't gotten to that portion of the day just yet. they did have an expert on the stand weigh in and verify there were three people here that night. here is what he said. >> it is a video i found on paul murdaugh's phone. the video looked like inside maybe a kennel area with a fence around it and a dog i believe to be a lab where he's trying to take a video of the tail of the dog. you hear three different voices in the video. >> reporter: the biggest problem with this video is that alec murdaugh has said he was never in that kennel that night until he discovered the bodies just before 10:00. so it really does poke a whole in a lot of the story, the version of events he's given to investigators saying he wasn't there. we'll see what the jury believes on that. >> catie, i understand there's been significant focus on maggie's cell phone, too.

they're also saying that paul and maggie never used their cell phones again at 8:49 p.m. that puts murdaughefore their time of death. the prosecutors are really putting together the pieces here in order to narrow when paul and maggie were murdered. now, keep in mind defense put the coroner on the stand, who says from his examination there's a three-hour time span. it's an estimate, 9:00 p.m. to your point, that cell phone data and lack of cell phone activity is absolutely critical to the prosecution's case. >> and the defense is now presenting its case. what do you expect to hear from them? >> well, i know exactly where they're going here. they're going to say this is a botched crime scene, which is true. this crime scene was mishandled in almost every way. that came out through testimony. they're going to say that matters because there could have been alternative theories of the case or other people investigators should have been looking at as the perpetrator of this crime. they really set the foundation for this the entire time. they're going to try and use these financial misdeeds and th

they have extracted video evidence from paul murdaugh's phone at 8:44 p.m., a recording that the staten and also at least a handful of witnesses have also identified alex murdaugh on that video at 8:44 p.m. which would put him at the murder scene around the time of the murder, so that could be a program for him. getting back to that testimony from the pathologist, we did learn some more details about the autopsies. she said that the first shot to paul murdaugh did not kill him, he was shot in the chest, the second shot was to the shoulder and the head, that was the fatal shot. she also said that he was standing at the time, there were no signs of a struggle and that he was facing his attacker, facing the shooter. so if it was his father as the prosecution alleges, he was looking right at him. as far as maggie murdaugh goes, the pathologist says she was shot at least four or five times, there were four or five wounds on her, the fatal shots were fired when she was on the ground including one to the back of the head. no sign of a struggle with her, either. erica, jim? >> details are alar
