we heard her asking questions to the speaker of the house, kasie, is paul ryan giving up his dream or not? >> there is a little discrepancy between what president trump is saying publicly and what house speaker ryan has said he's wanted for most of his career. he has focused on this as part of a policy project. he took a lot of risks saying you want to reform medicare, it a risky, political thing to do and it hurt him a little bit when he was running with mitt romney in 2012. but now the president says i don't want to touch medicare, i don't want to touch social security, i don't want to do any of these things. and speaker ryan says he's not giving up. he did in a breakfast with reporters make a distinction between long-term entitlement reform so what happens to people who are not at or near retirement age as opposed to those who are close to retirement age. that is a distinction that has almost always been made in this policy fight. nobody has ever said i want to grab that third rail of medicare reform and tackke a bunch of people already relying on medicare and change their benefits

paul ryan the house speaker was pressed on all of these issues earlier today. take a look at what he had to say. >> two, entitlements are reformed with repealing and replacingby ma cair right now. that's two entitlements we're reforming just this spring so we are well on our way to reforming entitlements by repealing and replacing obamacare so i think that's a pretty darned good start. >> reporter: but the reality here, ali, is that you know, president trump, his rhetoric is much different than paul ryan, when it comes to entitlements like medicare and social security. paul ryan has essentially built almost his entire political kind of reputation and career as the guy who is willing to te on the hardest questions in government, and trying to control the costs associated with entitlements. it's both a necessary thing for the long-term fiscal health of the country, republicans would argue but also politically so difficult to grapple with, and the speaker really has been out front in saying i'm the person that wants to take this on and you know, the president is,

mark: house speaker paul ryan says it does not concern him president trump does not offer to fill hisdse "i see him as more of a chairman." ryan made the remark during the nbc today show this morning. the speaker said we need more answers when it comes to russia. mr. ryan: we think we need to do an investigation here with our intelligence communities. there's one thing that is unique -- this gets into the methods and sources that is very sensitive. it's the most sensitive tool in our national security toolbox. that's why we have an intelligence committee of men and women in congress who have gone through the process of understanding those tools. need speaker ryan says we to make sure "nothing happens that should not have happened. dan coats will be caught in a fight ahead of his confirmation hearing today. president trump nominated him to serve as director of national intelligence. he will face tough questions from his former senate colleagues because some of the intelligence agencies he will oversee are involved in investigations touching on the president and russia. news is good news

that what happened to paul ryan, what happened to rupert murdoch. what happened to what you've seen happen to mitch mcconnell and so many others over the course of the last year? >> well, like, i sympathize with the congressional party. they have their own corporate duties and the presidency is not everything. you know, the presidency is not all of the federal government, the federal government isn't all of american governments, and american government isn't all of american life. so mr. trump is a small part of this. larger than perhaps we wish he were, but the modern presidency has become swollen beyond all the founders recognitions. but that being so, mr. mcconnell and mr. ryan have their own duties and imperatives and people to lead i sam a free agent. i do not have to do that. i've spent 40 years at the project of that bill buckley began in the mid1950s, of making american conservatism intellectually coherent and politically palettable. that is incompatible with the trump presidency. >> and as you look back on the history of the republican party
