paula newton is in boston for more details. paula, could it have made a difference, do you think, or are these allegations that might just be being leveled at russia, could it have made a difference? >> reporter: it's hard to know. it was first reported there were texts from the mother saying tamerlan wanted to join the extremist groups in the caucuses, thocaucuse caucasus, and authorities say would that have made a decision? the fbi might have said we're going to tail this guy or watch him or not let him travel. he did then subsequently go to russia. i know brianna you deal with this on the daily basis in washington, american authorities say even if we had that piece of information we might not have shared that with the russians because we wouldn't want to divulge our sources. russia alerted american authorities at least two times and in hearings in washington the police commissioner, edward davis basically said i don't know if it would have made a difference. clearly you always want to work with as much information as you have

paula newton in boston. what are you hearing about the remains that nobody wants?rter: well, michael, what a drama here. still there does not seem to be a resolution. what we do know, we're hearing two things. one the funeral home itself is telling us they expect a resolution to this soon, perhaps tomorrow. but not giving us any indication of what that resolution would be. and also the worcester police department, trying to keep a lid on this for the last few days there are protesters there they are trying to make sure it done get out of hand, they also said they are speaking with the family, michael, namely the unc of the tsarnaev brothers, to see what can be done to move this issue forward. and, michael, it's worth noting all of this started because catherine russell, the widow of tamerlan tsarnaev relinquished all right of next of kin to do anything about the burial and it was left to tamerlan's family who is not here in the united states, immediate family, and they are in russia. that's where it stands. we continue to wait to see what that solution will be. >>

our paula newton has been digging into this story as well. his has got to have that community absolutely shaking their heads and wondering if anyone is ever going to actually see the video. take me from the beginning. let me know where we stand in this. >> reporter: from the beginning, let's say that cnn, i have not seen the video, no one at cnn has seen the video, we cannot authenticate what the two veteran reporters at the toronto star are saying. use said, they each viewed this tape three times, not given the tape because they wanted too much money for the tape. the star said this was taken in the winter, in toronto, that they first saw it on may 3rd, and that the person who was asking money in exchange for the video, this person actually claims, ashleigh, to have been a person who has sold crack cocaine to mayor rob ford in the past. now, it goes without saying that mayor ford, as we just heard, denies all of this. he said the allegations are absolutely ridiculous. we have been in contact with dennis morris, the lawyer for mayor rob ford.

paula newton is joining us outside from boston to tell us, first of all, how do we know?hile ago in fact tamerlan tsarnaev's remains are left there. in the conversation he said, look, it's our muslim tradition. i know some people would have preferred cremation, but it's our muslim tradition that these people that are dead are buried. he also said it was an interfaith coalition from that community in virginia that decided they would lend him a hand to make sure that his nephew's body could be laid to rest. he also said he had a conversation with his brother, tamerlan's father, yesterday just to give him an update. and the point was he didn't ask me where he was buried, he has no information that his brother will be returning to the united states any time soon. and he told me, frankly, it angers him. he thinks he should be here for his children and should be here to help out with the investigation if he can. suzanne. >> paula, speaking about the investigation, any updates on that? >> well, in terms of this investigation, we're dealing with search warrants still activated on

paula newton is live in boston. what did the russians know about tamerlan tsarnaev that they kept to themselves? >> reporter: they apparently had proof that the mother of tamerlan tsarnaev and tamerlan were communicating about his desire to join extremist groups in russia. we don't know the exact nature, but apparently it raised a red flag with the russians. they didn't turn that information over to either the fbi or the cia, and the problem here is that some authorities are saying look, had we known that, we would have tailed tamerlan tsarnaev. maybe he wouldn't have been allowed back to russia when he came back in 2012. we would have questioned him, put him under some kind of surveillance. that just didn't happen. many are asking about how many pieces to the puzzle are missing in terms of what information the fbi could have had ahead of time to avert the boston bombing attacks. you know, don, a lot of people you talk to say it is unrealistic to think that detail of information would have been shared between the tw

i asked our paula newton on the ground what more she can tell us about it. >> erin, the city of toronto much of canada is talking about little else. according to the toronto "star" a reputable newspaper in toronto, two of their reporters watched this video that they say shows the mayor of toronto, rob ford, smoking crack cocaine. now, we must say at krp, we've not been able to see this video, we cannot verify it. but these two reporters who say they viewed this video each three times, they say it is what they say it is. it is a video of rob ford actually smoking crack cocaine. which brings up a number of issues. now, for the mayor's part, he's denying it. he said the allegations are ridiculous. his lawyer is also saying that, look, he will fight these charges. but i have to tell you that gawker.com in the united states now says that they want to make this video public. the person who first exposed the mayor said he will not make the video public unless he is paid. gawker said they have so far raised $20,000 and trying to determine how much will be enough to actually are elease this vide

paula newton joining us live from boston. paula, what did these texts say? >> well, apparently they said, and definitively, that he, tamerlan, was interested in joining extremist groups in russia. brianna, if that's true, that goes completely against what the fbi said when they concluded their investigation in 2007 saying, he doesn't seem to pose a threat, even though the russians had flagged him to us. what's interesting here is that you have the chairman of the house intelligence committee, mike rogers, saying this means somewhere somebody dropped the ball, that the russians weren't giving us all the information. some are saying, that intelligence sharing is too detailed. the russians flagged tamerlan tsarnaev to the united states twice. so whether or not this information was there, but it could have been critical information, because it certainly shows that tamerlan tsarnaev was in search of that kind of radical thinking, of those kinds of militants in the area of russia, months before the boston bombings. brianna? >> the other thing, paula, is that tamer
