paula newton joins me with more. and the first question is what is the latest? >> well, don at least four and possibly more. officials are trying to determine exactly what they are dealing with. the families out of montreal saying they had gone missing in january. officials believe they went to turkey but they had their sights joining isis in turkey. the counterparts are working to find out what happened to these people, and hay were very young, and don, the families don't know how or when they were radicalized, and they are trying to piece it together. and especially if you look at the brutality since january of isis and the fact that the young people showed desire to go there to join this group is shocking to the families here in canada and in the last few months they have been trying to revoke the passports of people they are suspecting to go overseas to commit terrorist acts or join terrorist groups, but it did not happen in this case, and the people with experience in canada saying that we want these passports to be are revoke vocced so that this does not h

paula newton is in ottawa helping to cover the story. what do we know about the teens? >> we know they were radicalize ed in the last four month, and the families were alerted that they were missing, and it is apparent that it was hand eded off to the national security officials, and that they had gone overseas to the middle east likely trying to get to syria in the hopes of joining isis. the fact remains, anderson, that the families are frantic to find out what happened to the children. >> their exact leication is not known? >> no, the officials on the ground in turkey are trying to help the families figure out what happened. but the fact is that there are many westerners that authorityies trying to track, and it is a huge problem, and the trail is cold. once they step over into syria, it is very difficult to find out what happened to them. >> and you have reported that canada started to revoke passports passports in these cases, but that did not happen here. >> yes, anderson you and i have been cover inging this for more than ten year, and we did it in britain, talkin

cnn's paula newton has more. paula? >> reporter: canadian officials opened an investigation into at least four teenagers that have left the country to join isis. the trail has gone cold in turkey, but they have open investigations and there may be more than four that somehow became radicalized. families did reach out to authorities. that's how they first became aware that these people had left sometime in january. they were reported missing. some attending a community college in montreal. that community college has now suspended one muslim group that they say is responsible for spreading hate speech and some really candid comments from security officials here saying they see the problem of radicalization here only growing and they need to continue to rely on those families to see the early warning signs of that ra radicalization. the canada government aggressive in revoking passports they believe are trying to travel to these areas to join isis. without fair warning ahead of time, it's impossible to really stop them. pa

paula newton is in montreal with us for more on this story.ome signs of if not at least being radicalized, but that they were getting ready to go somewhere for a very long time? >> you know the situation is different from each teenager and their own family situations. we did speak to a couple of families you know in saying that look they are kind of said they wanted to go. we tried to talk them out of it. did anyone know specifically they were going to leave on a specific day, no. what seems to be the dividing line are people are coming forward to say we should have spoken to authorities sooner and we didn't. fred these teenagers were reported missing essentially to authorities when it was too late. of what they're trying to do now is put together the puzzle. how many were serious about crossing the border to turkey to get to syria. how many have managed to get to syria or are they in some kind of a training camp or now in turkey and perhaps just afraid to come home? it is a very, very complex investigation, four confirmed with links to jihadi
