how central is jesse benton to the rand paul presidential campaign to the ron paul and rand paul political that machine? how important is he in kentucky where he is not just part of rand paul's operation. he's been a very high profile asset for mitch mcconnell. >> jesse benton is not just part of the staff. he is part of the family. he is married to ron paul's niece. you would say he is one of the top loonlts. i first met him in 2007. i would say as he central cog in that operation. you're right. jesse's finger prints are all over the campaign in kentucky. until sorensen pled quilty last august. jesse resigned that position about three days later. currently, jesse is running a campaign for state auditor here. a state representative, republican running against a state auditor who is considered to be a rising star within the democratic party. a gentlemen by the name of adam. when jesse took on this client, the state represented mike harmon, he was pretty candid. part of the reason for doing so was to sort of rough up ahead of a possible challenge to rand paul next year. he is running for re-

two of them run rand paul for -- the rand paul for president super pac.e of them in a really high stakes year for kentucky republicans, one of them is the key operative in all of republican politics in kentucky from rand paul to mitch mcconnell to this effort to try to spike the career of the democrat who kentucky republicans are really most afraid of in terms of the way he is going to move up. jesse benton had been dispatched to do that to try to help rand paul. had to step down from everything, though, to fight these federal charges laid against him. he pled not guilty yesterday in federal court, he says he will clear his name. of course with that big political gun no longer pointing at him, adam's path looks clearer for this democratic star to be. and that brings us to the other problem for rand paul. which is why there is i think good reason to believe that rand paul might reasonably quit the presidential race as early as this weekend. that's because tomorrow rand paul has to be home in kentucky trying to persuade two-thirds of the republican party in

paul, the guy in the ron paul t-shirt is jessie benton. to run the campaign in kentucky, run this campaign against adam and bloody him up a bit. he was running the low-level state campaign until jessie benton got indict. that's why the headlines in kentucky state politics were so apocalyptic when those indictments came down. when the three ron paul, rand paul operatives got indicted in the bribry scandal earlier this month. it turns out those guys, those guys who got this federal indictment against them are not just leftovers from the ron paul 2012 presidential campaign. two with of them ran the ron paul super pac. and one of them in a high takes year for republicans is -- from rand paul to mitch mcdonnell this effort to try to spike the career of the democrat who kentucky republicans are most afraid of in terms of the way he will move up. jessie benton had been dispatched to do that. to help rand paul. he had to step down from everything to fight these federal charges against him. he pled not guilty yesterday in federal court in iowa. jes

it's been more of the same since the rand paul campaign, since then from the rand paul campaign.ease help." please help. another one "has it all been decided?" is this all there is? the rand paul for president campaign is not built on sunshine and rainbows. it's not a happy warrior kind of campaign. it's more like a worried warrior kind of campaign or just a worried -- it's very anxious. it's a very anxious campaign. but this weekend the rand paul campaign had reason to be anxious as the kentucky republican party had to vote on saturday as to whether or not they would allow senator paul to run for president and run for reelection to his senate seat at the same time. under kentucky law, you have to choose one or the other. it's against kentucky law to run for two different positions in the same election. rand paul came up with a way around that law, though, it would involve the republican party in kentucky holding its primary as normal but also in addition to that they'd have to hold a caucus as well just so rand paul could run for president and senate at the same time. that's a h

it involves rand paul of kentucky.e specifically, people who have surrounded rand paul for years. when he decided to jump into politics he inherited an infrastructure from his father. he had been a perennial long-shot protest candidate for president on the republican side. during those campaigns, he built up not just a crew of supporters, but a crew of political operatives, which, when rapid became a politician, rand inherited. and one of the things that those political operatives did, allegedly has now led to multiple federal indictments. it has to do with a high-profile endorsement that rapid got on the eve of the caucuses. they got an iowa state senator to switch sides. to throw his support from michele bachmann to rand paul. but that endorsement from that senator, that was allegedly the result of a bribe. the senator came out and said so, he said the paul campaign paid him for his endorsement. they were making secret payments to him over the course of months in 2012. that state senator eventually pled guilty in cou

and it was a lot of time spent with paul. it was eight full mock debates where we would work for the stand-in for paul. it was eight mock debates. ted olsson, we would prep him and have specific questions and scenarios and play them out. but paul was very hands on. he edited all the materials. it was a con stand work in progress. by the end we had a 40 pound briefcase. and as we were flying to the various campaign stops, he would practice different parts of the debate, review materials. he was younger than i was when he first ran for office. truly inspirational. and paul's encouragement when i told him i was contemplating what do you think if i ran or congress, paul just said he completely encouraged me. and i really credit that as a turning point. >> on the night of the debate, where were you? >> i was at center college with paul there in the back room. >> in kentucky? >> in kentucky. and i was in the room when secret service and paul and his wife went into the room afterwards. i thought he did a great job. >> let me ask you
