pedestrians are constrained to use the balboa park station. we need to have a different approach to it. i am hoping we can have that happen. last year, we approved the better neighborhoods plan for balboa park. ocean avenue. just past city college on ocean avenue, also inclusive of balboa park, and the station itself. we actually zoned it for housing, but the mta does not want to look that pretty housing in trans in-oriented development, along balboa park, -- housing in transit oriented development. 16 to 20 years from now, that is not the way we need to be working collaborative be. -- collaborative late -- collaboratively so i will be looking at support for that. i want to thank the department of public works and for another for pushing it forward to make it happen. there are those who do not receive the same attention that people elsewhere in san francisco received, and it is the little that i can do for representing a district that does not get its fair share -- other than that, i am submitting a hearing request to hear more about dpw, my n

more -- a lot of pedestrian lanes and wider sidewalks. they really have a policy that in this city of streets, we walk. and they have widend all the sidewalk, stepped up the quality. they made squares. they made a fantastic federation square because they had no square in city streets. no new building must have close wall to sidewalk because if you are to walk in the city, you cannot accept blank walls. they say in the old buildings you have to open up. the new ones never go in before you can prove that you can do something for the city. they say if you are to walk, you need first class street furniture and they made a fantastic series of street furniture. they think you should have enjoyment when you walk around, so they see the city as a gallery for contemporary art and change it all the time and have ins sthrawtions and whatever. -- installations and whatever. they see light as a fantastic enjoyment of the city. half the time the city is out. it's dark by the way. they have put granite on all te sidewalks and more than half of them, and

it is a very discreet location that does not seem to interrupt pedestrian traffic. my second concern is the one voice here today, and that is about safety and congestion down there, but i was given assurance that they would be guided out to post street to the bike lanes, so they are going to get position to get out, and they will be given a map that will be on the bicycle to come back in on the theory side -- geary side. there probably will be problems during that construction, but i imagine there will be some serious pedestrian issues there as well. construction people are going to have to figure out how to deal with that. i do not know that we can do anything about that. i share commissioner harrison's concern about the use of these storage facilities, particularly at golden gate park. i think they are unattractive, and it resonates with me every time catherine howard says we need a plan for behind the band shell. we cannot keep adding container facilities to solve our revenue enhancement issues, so i'm going to repeat to the staff that i think we need to address

in san francisco and to begin identifying potential barriers for pedestrians. one suggestion that supervisor avalos brought up, curb ramps, i know in my district, the approve something like $35,000, very expensive -- they approved something like $35,000. i would like to thank the members of the pedestrian safety advisory committee for their hard work and one from the richmond district and others for their work on the report. i look forward to hearing what they have learned and what their recommendations and goals are, in the short-term and long-term for improving pedestrian safety in san francisco, and i also want to thank supervisor chiu, for supporting financial aid and undocumented immigrants in the city. we heard from one of the students that we helped to give a temporary stay from his deportation hearings, and i think if we look at it, students from latino and other ethnic groups, i think we can understand the importance of supporting the dream act at the state level but also reintroducing it at the federal level, as well. i will submit the rest. thank you

we don't have yet, but we are also going to have pedestrian plan. as i mentioned already, road safety is also on the agenda. yet having a plan and having it put into practice is -- i don't have to tell you, two different things. we have had that hearing in the brussels parliament asking for the results of the plan and in fact it was quite frustrating. as you can see, painting lanes was going forward. we made quite good progress there. we have cycling routes 18 being planned and we only have four of them. that was in 2007. in 2009, there are only four of the 18 routes being really, well, operational. one of the big problems we have had and so i'm optimistic for the near future, but it was we had a great plan. we did have money in the budget, but we did not have enough people in the administration that could really, well, make it happen. and quite recently, two years ago, in that period, by the way, they really decided that we should enforce the administration because it's really, you need to work on it before you can realize what you would like to --
