peggy bunker was on the fire line and joins us tonight in san jose. peggy? >> reporter: good evening, raj. you know, the conditions were perfect for a fire such as this. hot, dry. with strong bursts of win, pushing up the side of the hillside. firefighters say it was really the homeowners who helped in preventing this from being a lot worse. neighbors say they saw smoke pouring out of an empty house on clayton road today, flames jumping from the first house to the second one, demolishing them both. a huge response included 17 san jose fire department engines and cal fire hitting it from the air and the ground. neighbor robert long says people who live there know how to protect their homes. he wasn't concerned a bit. >> and we've got everything cleared to 100 feet around the house. >> you're not worried right now? >> no. >> reporter: it turns out this is what long does for a living. he disks land around homes and business, protecting them from fire. he shows me his yard, with 100 feet of dirt all around it. he says most of his neighbors have done the same. to

nbc's peggy bunker has been on the scene for us. peggy, what's the latest?>> we have been watching this transition, raj, and firefighters have done a miraculous job. two homes are completely leveled as fire jumped from one house to the next and started to crawl up the hillside. firefighters overhead, cal fire dropping water from the helicopter did a terrific job. let's show you what it looks like right now. part of the problem is the fire started in the valley here. you can see the white smoke as you mentioned, a good sign sm showing the flames are less active getting to the tail end of the fire looking for the hot spots. however, after it started in this house, the flames jumped to a barbecue that was outside the homes exploding of propane tank. that was not the source of the fire. rather, a secondary sent thereafter the flames leaped then to a second house. then you look at this hillside here in this very populated neighborhood. you see the flames climbed up the side of the house and that's where the firefighters were actively battling back hot spots that

good morning, kris and peggy. for the first time, we are hearing from a supporter of ryan chamberlain. i spoke off-camera with one of his friends who tells me that he's, quote, not a bad guy. he seemed flabbergasted that his friend had been charged with a federal crime. when asked if he had spoken with chamberlain, ever since he went on the run, he said he was in the dark if this morning was the first court appearance here at the federal courthouse in san francisco for ryan chairmmberla. this was after sf police took him into custody. chamberlain appeared in the federal courtroom wearing what appeared to be the same sweater and shorts he was wearing during that arrest captured on that cell phone video. and while several of his family and friends looked on this morning, the magistrate informed him he was charged with one count of possession of an illegal destructive device. that federal agent tells us this morning, they discovered during a warrant search of his apartment in san francisco on saturday. now, a law enf

peggy bunker joins us live. do they think the golfers killed the owls? >> reporter: investigators have no idea who did this or why but it was a horrific way for the owls to die and a blow for the city of mountain view who worked so hard to protect them. >> reporter: this golfer loves the shoreline golf links, including the frequent sightings of the protected burrowing owls. back in march two of the protected owls of about a dozen remain in the area were killed after a golf cart seed bottle was stuffed into a burrowing hole trapping the two owls inside. >> couldn't believe that someone did that. it was just horrible. >> reporter: the city of mountain view biologist discovered the two owls, one dead and one barely alive. the owl could not be saved. the head golf pro says they're beautiful creatures that hurt no one. >> they are very fragile. they take over abandoned holes from the gophers. >> reporter: the department of fish and wildlife is investigating. they can't confirm if trapping the owls was deliberate but those we spoke to say it was on purpose. >>

peggy bunker has more on the leak that lasted nearly a week. >> this is a lot of water going down the street, wasted water. >> reporter: gallons of clean water pumping out on to the street in san jose's willow glen neighborhood prompted homeowner brian johnston to call newsrooms for help after he couldn't get it from san jose water. johnston says he called the company on thursday, june 19th, and they told him they would investigate that leak within 48 hours. he says they did, but three days later, the water continued to flow. so he called the company again. they said they would get to it as soon as they could. >> so i started getting mad, and i called newsrooms. >> reporter: by day four, johnston's neighbors were also getting agitated, watching the nonstop flow of water. one neighbor walked right through his front door. >> what are you doing, lady? you're in my house. she said you have a water leak. are you kidding me, lady? it's on the other side of the curb. >> reporter: he posted a sign so neighbors would know he was as mad about the leak as they were. by day six he alerted the med

good evening, christie. >> good evening to you, peggy. so many california's beaches are wide open like ocean beach here that you don't even think twice about public access. some land owners are making it difficult for people to get if the beaches by their homes and now that move could cost them. even on a cool day san francisco's ocean beach is a popular place to wind down. if you try to find a secluded spot near holmes along california's coast you may face some challenges. >> some decades, in fact, wealthy land owners along the beach in malibu and places in southern california have routine any denied access to the beach for just everyday people. one way or the other they put up barricades, put up fences, put up gates. >> reporter: nbc bay area political analyst says the tide is changing. a law just signed by governor brown allows the california coastal commission to fine property owners who illegally block public access to beaches. >> before i could say, okay, you're doing something wrong, we think, get into a long protracted court argum

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with video of that arrest.he was hauled away in handcuffs in front of a lot of people. >> absolutely right, laura. police arresting a man that has been the subject of a national manhunt but that is exactly what happened 6:30 p.m. last night. watched the arrest go down right in front of their eyes. witnesses captured the arrest on their phones reportedly hearing chamberlain complain he couldn't get his arms behind his back. you see him hunched over and not resuissing arrest and you could tell not comfortable. semi dragged over to a police car and found here at christy field after the white nissan altima was parked in the parking lot. a witness filmed this arrest on his phone. he could tell right away this was not a regular arrest. bistanders say they were shocked. >> no way. >> we were just talking about him earlier. >> that's scary, man. >> wondering if he just got pulled over but then he had guns on him. >> that car is full of explosives, too. >> it is? >> yeah. >> they are talking about how the car is full of

peggy? >> awful to hear these stories.esterday i was reporting on a shooting and today another shooting at seattle pacific university, just a little over 4,000 students attend there. they are grieving for the one student that was killed and praying for the three others that were injured. now, this all began yesterday about 3:00 in the afternoon when a 26-year-old man, who is not a student at that school, walked into the math and engineering building and started shooting. he was well armed. one mom and daughter had just walked through that hallway and missed the shooting by just minutes. >> we had just reached that area. we could have very well, five minutes early, been at that very location. that's extremely disturbing. >> nearly 1,000 people crammed into the first free methodist church on the spu campus where they prayed for the injured and the family of the 19-year-old who died. they leaned on their faith for comfort devastated again over gun violence in our country. >> this is a tragic moment for seattle and a tragic mo

i'm peggy bunker. >> let's talk about the weather.ou know the heat is on from san francisco to san jose. temperature jumping up today and about to jump up some more. checking in with rob. >> seeing the clear skies and in the case of san francisco temperatures getting close to 80 degrees. hot days ahead out towards the tri valley. right now 84 degrees. at least at the airport but south of san jose as we head down, you saw temperatures well into the 09's. we're still at 95 degrees. that will be one of the hottest spots tomorrow that will have a chance of topping 100 degrees in the forecast for tomorrow. right now in san francisco 85. you can see out toward livermore temperatures climbing. keeping just the coast line in the 70's right now. and inland spots like livermore sending more degrees of warming. compared to yesterday. 95 right now. only in the 80's yesterday and temperatures will climb more as we get into the start of the work week. seeing the clear skies continue and for tomorrow morning. some parts of the bay area will be wakin

. >> and i'm peggy bunker. we do have breaking news to tell you about. one person is dead after a small plane crash in livermore. this happened in a field north of livermore, near 580 freeway. the crash sparked a small brush fire before it was contained. we have a crew headed to the scene. >>> a brush fire threatening homes in el sobrante is contained. two homes were in danger on olinda road. they burned 15 acres. some residents were evacuated. firefighters are still doing mop-up. >> it was very difficult. we had a wind-driven fire coming upslope. crews made an aggressive stance on it. we have it rapped right now.
