peggy fox broke the story and you've got an update. >> we told you tuesday the same two women tried to sell and did, in fact, sell some insurance to arlington county police. now we've learned that those same two women were allowed to sell insurance at two more police departments and a fire department. union officials in d.c. are warning their members about these two women, cynthia padone and donia underwood who have been arrested for allegedly scamming city workers and police for their personal information. the president of the d.c. firefighters union put an alert on their website saying the same two females have visited many d.c. firehouses trying to sell supplemental insurance policies. atlanta police say they were posing as aflac representatives. one of the women, 30-year-old cynthia padone seen in this video posted a picture of herself with fishnet stockings and bulletproof vest standing inside what appears to be a drug enforcement unit of the metropolitan police department. a police spokeswoman says the criminal investigations division is looking into whether the women broke any l

>> reporter: i'm peggy fox in arlington county where a violent crime spree is worrying some residents. in just the past three weeks, there have been five homicides and it all started with a murder-suicide right here. >> it is very strange and i don't -- it's sad. >> reporter: an arlington county police officer sits outside the apartment where 59- year-old keafe spriggs lived. he and his temporary houseguest, 31-year-old carl moten were killed tuesday morning. yesterday there was a stabbing right out in the open along wilson boulevard. a man who tried to stop a thief from stealing his vehicle was stabbed multiple times. police are searching for the suspect. and for the men seen in this surveillance video committing an armed robbery at a check cashing store along columbia pike. a suspect was arrested in the july 27 murder of tommy wong who was killed inside his jewelry store. so many violent crimes in such a short period has some residents on edge. >> it's very tragic. >> it is certainly something that concerns us. >> reporter: police chief douglas scott doesn't see any connection betwe

i'm peggy fox, 9news now. >> and not everybody is getting help to rebuild after that quake. coming up at 6:00, we'll be talking to o -- to a very busy building here worldwide. now, they said that they turned their movie back here and announced that they received a generous $5 million to restore the damage sustained there in the quake. and that money will go to repairing the stone work and that either fell, crumbled, or cracked in the central power, which is the highest point in the nation's capitol. and today, they hoisted the first restored piece of something called a stone on top of the cathedral. >> and we're hired than the washington monument. we're a little higher off the top of the monument right now. so you know, the symbolism of the site and the national cathedral and we're going to put it back together. >> reporter: the $20 million repair is expected to take 10 years and the cathedral has received nearly $8 million so far, which includes today's donations. we talked to some people today and asked them if they remember where they were when the place struck one year a

. >> reporter: i'm peggy fox at the historic fredericksburg baptist church. 157-year-old building survived heavy damage during the civil war and now it's been attacked again, but leaders are most surprised by who did it. >> he pushed his way through these doors. >> reporter: once he broke his way inside the church he tried to get out through a stained glass window, but the plexiglass on the out wouldn't budge. >> -- outside wouldn't budge. >> he pulled the closet door off the hinges and threw the door through the window. >> reporter: police were in the area looking for a man who just tried to kick in the doors of a hair salon and butcher. they heard glass breaking at the church and saw the door come through the window. when the suspect climbed out he immediately surrendered but then began spitting at the officers and continued to spit until after he was placed in the patrol vehicle. 22-year-old edmond toby barr whitehead, a second lieutenant in the royal british navy was arrested and charged with burglary, destruction of property and assault on an officer. >>

peggy fox reporting live. back to you. >> sounds like so many more could have been hurt. >>> we do now know the name of that alleged shooter, surae chinn is live from the shooting scene with more on that. >> reporter: derek, we've just been able to confirm the shooter and his name. it is floyd corkin of herndon, 28 years old. that shooting happened in the lobby of the six-floor building you see right there. meanwhile the shooter again is in police custody as far as we know. the security guard who was shot is hailed a hero today, is in the hospital. family research council, a conservative christian lobby group, confirms leo johnson is the security guard who was shot and wrestled the shooter to the ground. he's worked here more than 10 years as a security manager. the group has been offering statements since this happened earlier this morning. our own peggy fox is looking into that very question. she's here with a closer look at the violent crime spree. unusual for this part of our area. >> reporter: yes, it is very strange and scary for some residents. in just a little over two weeks there have been five homicides. that's more than the past two years combined. >> all of a sudden there's five murders in two weeks. i don't know -- i'm just trying to make sure i keep myself and my wife protected. >> reporter: an arlington county police department sits outside an apartment where 59- year-old keith sprigs lived. he and his temporary houseguest, 31-year-old carl moten were killed tuesday morning. >> it had to be at least two. >> reporter: you think two people did it? >> yes, two people did it. >> reporter: police aren't saying how they were killed but spriggs' 85-year-old mother thinks they were either shot or stabbed. yesterday there was a stabbing right out in the open along wilson boulevard. a man who tried to stop a thief from stealing his vehicle was stabbed multiple times. po
