he sold the concept to an officer of the marine corps i what would become camp pendleton down in san diego. they took that idea of a code within the navajo language to a test the navajo indians used in not test easily passed. my recollection is they were 10 times faster than morse code. it began with 29 navajo code talkers inventing the first phase of what became the navajo code. it began then as i understand it one of the early key battles. it slowly between that encounter with the japanese up until iwo jima three years later it grew as the buzz went out. these guys couldn't do this and the japanese don't get it. so on so it grew and grew when iwo jima was the big test. at the time of iwo jima there were 200 code talkers approximately and 200 more because of the success of iwo jima 200 more being trained for the invasion of japan. >> what is intriguing is this is an unwritten language. >> you are absolutely right, and they weren't speaking their unwritten language to another code talker. they were taking it, translating it into a code that was english language based and then it woul
