on the peninsula. in a very real sense, when you think about the peninsula south, it really is a hub for stability within northeast asia. so what happened there really has a very serious or positive effect throughout the region. general thurman is exactly right. the responsibility of the command favors to keep the armistice, maintain peace and stability on the pavement below and be prepared with our allies to defend the republic of korea if necessary. i do not see, even though we perceive right now that there's a great charm initiative going on by kim jong-il, i do not need that it's anything different than has been done in the past. we've seen it before. we held out her hand and at one point they get what they want to go back to business as usual. so i think as general thurman said, you have to be calm when you analyze it. we have to look at it over a long period of time. you have to understand what's happening and you don't want anyone washington d.c. to set their hair on fire because miscalculation

we're following breaking news from the peninsula.ight now crews are battling a huge fire at a machine shop in redwood city. burning out of control at bay rowd and douglas avenue. the -- bay road and douglas avenue. the flames can be seen for miles. janine de la vega was the first reporter on the scene 90 minutes ago and joins us live. are the flames out but still some smoke? >> reporter: i don't see any flames from where i'm standing. it could definitely still be burning inside. it's not still under control. you just see a lot of smoke. but firefighters are making good progress. can you see? a lot of white and gray smoke. that means it's running out of fuel. they've been attacking this from the outside using their aerial ladders. this just grew so quickly. this fire broke out at 6:00 a.m. here at a commercial business warehouse. it appears to have affected two businesses that may do manufacturing. the fire quickly grew to six ales larms. we're told that -- alarms. we're told that 100 firefighters were on scene to battle this. it's un

the peninsula rch, you'll see 7 san mateo, 72 in palo alto.ncisco will be right near 70 at the water, a little cooler towards the airport but overall you'll find the north bay, east bay and tri-valley, everybody here expecting to see a good mix of low to mid-70s and again no cloud cover really in sight. plenty of sunshine here for your sunday. now, i fast forwarded this and notice what's happening. this is next weekend and look at that. you find some showers that could be approaching the california coastline. again, not this monday but next monday, which would be the final week of january. this would be the only hope we have as we move toward the last few days of january, getting into february. you can see this area of rainfall does get very close to the bay area. as we round out january, again one of the driest months this year starting off and one of the driest climate logically speaking this could be very good news as we head towards next week. we'll continue to track that and of course those very warm temperatures will be staying for today

we are talking about an unhealthy air quality bay for the north bay and peninsula and today really onef those days where it's a catch-22 you want to be outside and enjoying the weather but we've got unhealthy air to deal with. we're waking up to beautiful clear skies. this is a spectacular look that we're taking across the bay area. you can see off in the distance the hazy particulates sitting in the lower atmosphere. kind of the deirty look along te mountainside. the temperatures will be very warm today. in fact, we're talking about highs today that will be back into the low and mid-70s. this is record-setting territory even to get back into the 70s this time of year. so what we're going to be looking at is the temperatures back in the 70s for the most part. increased fire danger and poor air quality will be with us once again for today and also for tomorrow. here's the thing as we head through the upcoming week it doesn't look like there's any rain in the forecast. the microclimate forecast shows that temperatures will be back in the low to mid-70s for the north bay and east bay and
