we begin with breaking news out of pennsylvania. an attack inside franklin regional high school, 20 miles outside of pittsburgh, sent at least 19 students and one security guard to the hospital this morning. doctors say some of the teens have suffered life-threatening injuries. their wounds have been described as, quote, severe and penetrating. >> they seem to actually almost have a pattern. most of them to the right lower abdomen and the right flank. >> i'm an obstetrician, gynecologist. a number of these patients, their moms are our patients, these are kids we likely delivered. one thing about being a doctor that lives in the community that you serve, you can become emotional, because these are your friends and neighbors. i was proud of the response. >> fortunately, at least six of those patients have been discharged. the suspect, a 16-year-old high school student, is also being medically treated. police say that his injuries are primarily to his hands. they also say it was school officials that helped stop the rampage. >> how was

male student at franklin regional high school in murraysville, pennsylvania, went on a rampage this morning stabbing as many as 20 people. at least seven of the victims we are told have life-threatening injuries, and we know that in one hospital three were in surgery. the victims ranging in age from 15 to 60. the suspect we are told is a sophomore student who police say went classroom to classroom and stabbed whoever came into his path. the students were just arriving for the day, and this went on for 30 to 40 minutes before he was taken into custody. the parents are now being allowed to take their children home from school, and we will have much more on this throughout the hour. next hour, senate democrats are scheduled to pick up where president obama left off yesterday and try to force the republicans' hand on equal pay. a key theme in the democrats' 2014 inequality message. the test vote is expected to meet much debate, and the republicans are accusing the democrats of a ploy. >> many ladies feel like pawns, and they find it condescending that the democrats are trying to yuse this issue

ron allen is outside the hospital in monroeville, pennsylvania. ron, we know at least one of the victims is in critical condition. can you tell us what the latest is on that condition? >> reporter: well, we just got an update on his condition, he's 17 years old, and he has a very severe injury. he's described as being in extremely critical condition. the doctors said the other day that the knife entered his body and was within millimeters of piercing, or cutting his heart. so he has some damage to a lot of other internal organs. everybody in this community is hoping and praying that he makes it. he seems to be in the worst circumstance at this point. there are also a couple of other

breaking news this morning out of murrysville, pennsylvania. there's been a mass stabbing at a high school. kpix 5's cate caugiran is following the developments and she joins us now from the newsroom. cate. >> reporter: michelle, local authorities say the suspect is in custody and may have been a student. at this point there is no motive. we have video of where it happened at franklin regional high school in murrysville appeal. 15 miles east of pittsburgh. as many as 20 people are injured in this violent rampage four with serious injuries. it happened a couple of hours ago just as students were starting their morning classes. we're not sure yet if the victims are students, adults or a mix of both at this point. news crews from our sister station kdka in pittsburgh have been on the scene talking about how this impacted students on campus. >> as you can imagine, these students are traumatized by what they saw by what they heard and also by just simply not knowing what was going on around them and also not knowing if they were safe. >> reporter: t

we are following developing news near pittsburgh, pennsylvania. several people were stabbed this morning inside of a high school now one person is in custody. look at these live pictures. people packed outside of the school leaving the school. this is in marysville, pennsylvania. at franklin regional high school. again these are live pictures. you see the ambulances. police are out there and they are evacuating the school mow. we are getting a lot of different reports from local tv stations there on how many people were hurt this morning in this incident. some reports say eight people had been taken to hospitals. and then there are other reports saying as many as 20 people were hurt. the police haven't confirmed how many of the parents are students but they are saying the victims are ranging in age from 15 years old up to 60 years old. again this is a very fluid situation. they are also saying they expect everyone that was injured to survive. the emergency responders as you can see are there at the school. participants are rushing up -- parents ar

it is 5:14, pennsylvania is accused of a mass stabbing at his high school.tigaters are looking for a motive as an attack. a former classmate is speculating he may have snapped after years of being bullied. he describes him as a small boy, small for his age and the teasing was sometimes relentless. it happened in murraysville pennsylvania with an update on the students who are most seriously hurt. >> good morning to you pam. >> reporter: this is the high school where that sophomore stabbed his fellow classmates with two kitchen knives. as of this morning 10 students remain hospitalized four are in critical condition. >> reporter: he stabbed 24 people in a crowded hallway just outside of pittsburgh. >> the kids ran down the hall with the knives and my best friend stepped in in front of me and he got stabbed in the back and i held his hand and he didn't let go, the whole way to the hospital he did not let go. >> reporter: they helped to stop the rampage and mr. king took off and we both jumped on him and i am mobilized him. >> reporter: but not before two dozen

we're following a terrifying attack at a pennsylvania high school.y, to a brand new hour of "happening now." i'm jenna lee. jon: what an awful start to the day. police say a 16-year-old male student armed with two knives went on a stabbing rampage as students arrived at a high school out of pittsburgh. 19 students are wounded. one adult as well. doctors say two students at nearby hospital are critically injured. three are in surgery and thankfully all are expected to survive. the suspect is in custody. here is one student describing the chaos. >> my one trend got cut across the face. she was bleeding. my one friend saw her. i didn't see her. the one friend got stabbed in the back. my one friend's brother, he got tackled to the ground and they stabbed him several times. i don't know how he is doing. it is unbelievable. jon: there is a news conference underway right now outside the school. let's listen in. >> the actions and response of our staff, students, and local law enforcement officers saved many lives. our emergency responders provided critical
