it happens around pepperdine.you know, will -- and thanks for having me on -- pepperdine is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the country overlooking the pacific ocean, but it's nestled within the santa monica mountains which is a beautiful, untouched part of nature. part of that includes the possibility of wildfires, and as you've said, roughly once a decade or so we have fires in the area. and on occasion, hose fires encroach on campus, and this past week was one of those occasions. will: you know, it happened when i was a student in the '90s. unfortunately, by the way, fires are often followed by mudslides, but it's amazing how pepperdine has stood strong through it all. how close did this fire get to the university? >> well, i would say close enough to where it burned various parts of the university. almost entirely vegetation was burned, but what happened was as it came over the mountain through the malibu canyon area, you know, we triggered our shelter in place protocols that's tried and true th

pepperdine university.this is the malibu canyon road, and we focused a lot of our attention just to its east, because that's where we saw the rapid growth overnight. when winds were gusting over 50mph. but then we started to see the spot fires approach. pepperdine university. and at one stage, according to university officials, there were actually helicopters getting water from this alumni park. you can see some of the local lakes here within the pepperdine university area, taking the water, helping extinguish the flames but notice this this is the pacific coast highway, highway one. it jumped the highway and approached the coastline. the good news here is that it's running out of room to burn, because it's going to reach the coastline any time now. and there was also some reports earlier that the malibu pier were actually impacted are structures near the malibu pier. so something we're going to monitor once we see first daylight, which by the way, we believe climatologically speaking, the santa ana winds h

this is the view from inside the library at pepperdine.terally just outside the window. nbc's liz is in malibu with the latest. >> reporter: this is very much an active fire fight right now. we are here in malibu in the evacuation center right now. you can see behind us here, the smoldering here up in the hills. there's spot fires all around as we showed up here with several fire crews here trying to put out these flames. if look you up into the hills, these is an area with very nice homes. the fire getting close to those homes. we saw firefighters walking around those properties as they try to save property here. we're next to city hall as well. when they showed up, there were flames all near here. again, firefighters working to keep the flames away. if you can even see own here, we're very close to the ocean, just a couple miles away. pacific coast highway, the fire in certain areas jumped the highway. right now it's about 1800 acres fueled by really these strong erratic santa ana winds that just flared up overnight around 11:00 p.m. las

and that leads to that rapid spread, as we saw in that video near pepperdine university. these conditions are still extreme in southern california, at least through the middle part of the week due to those santa ana winds. so you got the winds, you got the dry conditions. i'm wondering how much longer can we expect to see this level of fire danger in our state? are we expecting moisture rain anytime soon? yeah, it's kind of a tale of two sides of the state, right? southern california, it's been below average. and fortunately, the outlook for december keeps a higher elevated risk for significant wildfires. but closer to home. you remember two weeks ago we had that atmospheric river pattern across the north bay. near average conditions to the north, but a diffent story to the south, which is typical of a la nina winter. southern california typically sees less of that equal chances of rainfall. the rain totals typically are higher from the bay area northward, which is precisely where we are so far for this rain season. now, in the backdrop of this, what about climate change?

the fire has since moved away from pepperdine, but schools in the santa monica-malibu unified school district are closed until tomorrow. while socal is dealing with a wildfire, we are expecting some rain and possible snow in the sierra, as vianey told us a little earlier. so let's go ahead and check in on how our drought conditions and sierra totals are doing for the state of california. because last year's snowpack was one of the largest on record, bringing meteorologist vianey arana back. vianey how are those numbers looking? you know, in terms of our drought, we're doing okay. most of california remains drought free, which is good. but we do have some areashat are considered what is known as abnormally dry. so as we look at this drought monitor, notice the key right up top. that yellow color means abnormally dry, which doesn't necessarily put it into the drought category. it isn't until we get into that moderate color severe extreme. and then we've got exceptional. now if i zoom this into the state of california, you do notice stretching down through parts of southern. we do have

and at pepperdine, where their finals, all of that has been canceled. we've seen a lot of people who were in the middle of the night woken up. this fire exploded when it was still dark out before midnight, and there was power went out. there was obviously no light, so all we could see when we were coming up here in the middle of the night was just the glow of the fire and firefighter lights. fires were firefighters working throughout all of the canyons. another thing that makes it so difficult to fight fire here in malibu is that all of these roads leading up into the canyons, there are just two lane roads. they're very narrow and getting up into the canyons is difficult. and we are also experiencing right now a high wind event. embers can travel up to a mile away so firefighters could be working on a fire in one area. an ember can travel and explode inside. a fire can explode in size mile away. and so then those firefighters have to race and chase the flames. we've seen a lot of that this morning. the winds right now picking up. and these winds are exp
