dunn was perhaps the most bold of the artists. he had little fear in covering the combat side of the war. he would get right up to the front lines and was very much engaged with capturing the soldiers as they were experiencing combat as well as a range of other experiences. dunn also created this very innovative tool. he created this metal sketch box which he used in the combat zone. if you have a big open sketch pad in that environment it would be difficult to use. he created this metal box with two scrolls. he was able to turn the handles and move to a fresh page when he was ready to do a new artwork. here we have one of the scrolls that depicts one of his studies for one of his later paintings that he did. a very simple but ingenious way of creating art in the combat zone. the section of the exhibit that we are in here depicts the engineering aspect of the first world war. as i mentioned, the artists were part of the army corps of engineers, the group of the military that builds things and moves things. since world war i was al

perhaps the most powerful object is this wheelchair. this is a wheelchair that was used during world war i. it came from a private collection in france and it sums up the idea of the individual in my view. one person used this wheelchair, had their personal story and you can see it's kind of a makeshift device, it's just a regular chair that was fitted with these wheels to turn it into a wheelchair. the wheelchair is depicted in one of the aef at works here where we see a soldier convalescing in a wheelchair during the war that illustrates how the artists were trying to capture the full range of the soldiers' experience and the wheel their provides that solitary object that speaks to the soldier experience. an aspect of the soldier's life is comradeship among his fellow soldiers and we see hire inere painting of two wounded soldiers you can see the connection and the idea of the individual experience and one of the most powerful images in my view is depicting comradeship among the allied soldiers. the last piece we have in the aef artis
