what's really interesting i think today to, not only the perryton tornado. in michigan. there was a tornado on the ground not that far from sandusky, ohio. just about 30 minutes ago, there was a tornado on the ground near pensacola, south of pensacola, florida, near the shore. and all of the tornadoes that were 1000 miles or more to the west. so what a violent, violent day we had today. now, the tornado threat is beginning to diminish, but the hail threat and the wind threat is not over yet for tonight. we are still going to have that threat, at least until probably two or 3:00 in the morning. after dark, storms are harder to see. tornadoes are harder to report, so the damage really is what you look for, even power flashes in the sky. there are still storms out there. oklahoma city, expected to your north and even toward i would say -- norman and points east toward, shawnee. you have a couple of storms, and the only real rotating storm we have is just to the east -- of sherman dennison in texas. but this was a day, that we would really like to forget. an awf

these are the two blocks behind me here in perryton. walk with me for a second, and you'll see what folks are actually doing at this hour. this was a gym at one point. it was a grocery before that. there's this illustrious history for this building, and now it is literally rubble. as you see, a couple of the residents here are pulling up bricks, initially they were stacked about this high on top of this car. for the last 20 minutes, that's what they've been doing. now they're trying to dig up more debris off this atv as well. this is one snippet, one snapshot of an entire community of 8,000 people that are really trying to process what's just happened. how do two tornados hit one little city that is on the border of oklahoma like back to back. and this is main street right here. the city hall area houses both the police department and the fire department. that's wiped away. and you just see all these neighbors. this is the one hardening part about this, ana, is that you are finding people going into random stores and cleaning up the gla

he is joining us now from perryton. i know it's a tough time for the community. more about what your volunteers on the ground are doing. >> we do so many things from a box ministry, which where we are handed out boxes, plastic totes, cardboard boxes where residents can collect what belongings they can from their homes. we are doing things like we brought our big generators here that can power entire schools just to help out in the outages. we have people feeding, shower teams. they are helping. the heavy machinery that are coming and helping the large pieces of debris that you can't pick up by hand. and we have a lot of our chainsaw teams helping here just to help people go through their homes and to try to collect what they can and get back, you know, the things that they have lost. >> so tbm, your group, just trains disaster relief groups in all 50 states. you have the third largest network in the nation. tell us more about, you know, when your teams are assessing the damage on the ground, how does this compare to other disaster relief scenes you have responded

nbc's sam brock joins us now from perryton, texas. sam, just how severe is this and the recovery efforts, what do they look like today? >> reporter: sure, jose, perryton, what are the odds that two or three tornadoes would strike a small strip like this overnight? and inflict the level of damage that we're seeing. pretty small, population of 8,000. you see all these folks out here right now, sweeping up, washing windows, as we step into the street, you'll see just all of these community members, colleagues and in some places people who don't even necessarily know the person they're helping out, just pitching in and trying to clean up. power lines trying to be restored right now. literally as you look off in the distance, there is a bank, the largest community bank. i spoke with one of the property managers and he said they're not sure if they'll make it through this, if the building is structurally sound. to give you a window into what is happening right now, that's the business side, 30 businesses damaged, jose. but as far as the emo
