let's take you back to peshawar now. pakistan security forces still struggling to regain control of the school there in peshawar. this is hours after it was stormed by taliban militants. 126 people were killed. most of them children. now pakistan, we understand, of course, is a nation in shock. nawaz sharif, the prime minister, has said this is a national tragedy. many political leaders coming out to condemn what has happened there. also india's prime minister tweeting, saying this is a senseless act of unspeakable brutality that has claimed lives of the most innocent human beings. young children in their school, just coming to us from narendra modi on twitter. this is a horrific attack and we are still getting details of what happened and waiting to hear from the security forces. we understand they are still trying to bring this to an end at the school in peshawar. with me is the bbc's own bennett jones. can you give us some context about the pakistani taliban? they've claimed responsibility, but who are they? >> there

let's briefly take you back to peshawar. we see the prime minister sharif giving the press conference there talking about how he intends to rid the country of terrorism. that's his promise. he has been saying this is the country's worst ever tragedy. he has been meeting with the other main political parties in the city. you can see them there at the line of political leaders. one of the things he has been talking about is just how to enhance security at every level. the other main piece of news coming out of the prime minister's office today is that the government decided to lift the moratorium on the death penalty on terrorists that a has been in place for years. that's been lifted today. let's bring in a commentator on pakistan's political matters. talking about the minister. how important is khan's role now? >> most important of all in pakistan. up to this point and issue, sadly he has been part of the problem rather than the solution. he's battled persistently the line that taliban, you can't fight then. you have to talk

this is an army-run school in the peshawar area. peshawar, very verks important, the capital of that frontier, that borderland. where the u.s. moves its materiel and supplies into afghanistan along the khyber pass, and it is where the taliban have been holed up. plus, in the days of osama bin laden fleeing from afghanistan. a lot of al qaeda was up there, too. so this is a war and they will attack whatever it is they want to attack. and alisyn, we've seen al qaeda and the taliban over the last since 2001, 9/11, all they do is attack sillian targets. >> and so, why this school in particular? is it the army connection? do we think that this was an actual target sending a message to the army? or was this an, a crime of opportunity? >> no, this is what they said. in a very chilling call, the taliban spokesman made to cnn, claiming responsibility, the pakistani taliban and saying this was in revenge for the military operations in north waziristan and in that area. and we really don't know the details of what's going on inside right now.

let's go to kamal hyder in peshawar. you have been able to see inside the school where that attack took place. describe what you saw. >> well, the situation we saw on the ground was grip. this was a city in a state of mourning today. most of the shops and businesses were closed. earlier today the military escorted us into the compound. this is what we saw. >> reporter: the perpetrators of the attack used this wall and a ladder to climb over it. after that they had a free run going towards the auditorium where all the students had gathered. as you can still see, the blood is on the ground. still fresh, and, of course, so is the memory. this is what is left of the principal's room. she was, of course, the last one to be discovered dead and burnt here in this particular room. this is where the suicide bomber detonated his device. this administrative building became a last refuge for some of the students who escaped the carnage inside the auditorium. this is where the heaviest of the fighting also took place, and this is whe

our pakistan correspondent shaimaa khalil is in peshawar. she has been speaking to one student who was at the school when the attack took place. >> the people have been gathering here outside the gate of the army public school throughout the day, putting flowers, paying respects, lighting candles. many of these people are students who have come here in solidarity and support of their fellow students who have been attacked by taliban militants. i'm here with one student who saw all of this happen. his name is akef. thank you so much for speaking to me. >> i am 18 years old. this is my last year. i'm about to graduate. >> reporter: i'm looking at your uniform. there's still a bit of blood on your jacket. >> yeah, if you can please show my shoulder. >> yeah, i can see blood. >> it's bloodstained. >> reporter: what happened? >> i came downstairs. i was having my examination, so i came downstairs and saw these three gunmen walking in. one of them just shot at me with a pistol. i ducked underneath a wall and stayed there for at least five minutes.

the city of peshawar near the border of afghanistan habben a flash point of violence. this attack the pakistani taliban's deadliest yet has left the country in shock. the students from elementary school through high school are the children of those serving in tack stan's armed forces and civilian families. ataliban group known at the ttb said it deliberately targeted the children because the army targeted its families and, quote, wanted them to feel their pain. the ttb has been under pressure from the military in their stronghold in pakistan's law little tribal belt, a campaign that has killed scores of operatives in recent months the army says. the attack is also putting pressure on the government of pakistan itself, which is long been accused of aiding the taliban within the borders and beyond in afghanistan. international condemnation was swift from the u.s. and other world leaders. >> this morning wherever you live, wherever you are, those are our children. this is the world's loss. >> the timing is not lost in the aftermath of another soft target attack this week.
