joining me now is pete williams. re we went to the news conference, you were telling me about where things go from here. >> right. well, the scene is not by any means, they're not just going home. the police officers now will go through that building room to room and they have really three goals. one is to make certain that there are no other potential victims inside that building, that the building is clear for them, and they get anyone else inside that building out into safety. secondly, they want to make sure that there's nothing hazardous still in that building. the gunman was said to have brought some items into the building with him. whether these were improvised bombs or something hazardous, we don't know, and the police, i think, at this point don't know either. but they've got to go room to room and make sure that the building is safe for other people to come back into when the clinic reopens. and the third reason they want to go through that room is to collect evidence. there will be a prosecution, this man

our justice correspondent pete williams has late details. >> reporter: isis taunts the u.s. in t latest propaganda video, saying american operations in iraq and afghanistan have left the military demoralized, struggling with suicide. no threats in that video. but here at home holiday travellers are finding more security at airports and on mass transit. as a new fbi and homeland security bulletin urges local police to stay vigilant. isis, it says, may expand efforts to conduct attacks against soft targets. but said the biggest threat of a paris-style attack is still overseas, while the top concern in the u.s. remains home-grown extremists. the bulletin said police here at home should encourage people to report what they consider suspicious and now there is an app for that. you could take a picture of something or someone suspicious and send it in with the address and police could check it out. the app is called see something, send something. it is now working in six states. colorado, louisiana, new york, pennsylvania, ohio and virginia with more to come. that message, if you

we think we have an ability to do that. >> joined by pete williams. pete, we got opening statements from comey and lynch designed essentially for all of us to calm the public. cameras went off, then what happened? >> well, nothing really in departing from the overall tone here. and i think the reason they wanted to speak out is because they've been briefing members of congress, members of congress have been talking about little dribs and drabs of what they said. they pretty much brushed off the isis propaganda video, saying that's not intelligence, they know of no intelligence of of a paris-style threat in the u.s. they remain focused as they have in the past year and a half isis keeps trying with a relentless flood of propaganda to get people in the white house might be willing to carry out attacks and that remains the focus of the fbi. what comey said is that they've stepped up a notch their surveillance of those people that they think perhaps the most likely to want to be willing to carry out attacks on behalf of isis. he put that number today as -

nbc chief justice correspondent pete williams explains the challenges that the fbi and cia are facingo disrupt future terror plots. >> the key to prevention in the u.s. officials say is good intelligence and good warning that something is being planned. we heard this from the fbi in the run-up to the july 4th liday where there were a series of arrests of people that they thought might be close to taking action and that's the kind of information they need and they say that that is the number one priority right now for the government. the fbi has instructed all of its field offices, all of its agents that monitor terrorism suspects to increase their surveillance. this is an enormously manpower-intensive operation to keep an eye on all of the potential suspects out there. the fbi has been quite transparent in saying they have terrorism investigations in every state. so that's one part of this. the second part is trying to monitor people who may be terrorism suspects and this is the going dark problem that u.s. officials have really been warning about since may and we're hearing about it

nbc justice correspondent pete williams joins me now from washington. pete, very busy travel week. a lot of people apprehensive about hitting the road this week, or flying, or whatever it is exactly they do. what should they know? >> well, i don't know of any connection between drivers, which is the majority of travelers on this thanksgiving weekend, and any kind of terror concerns. in terms of the airports, there will probably be somewhat longer lines, a little more attention paid to carry-ones. a little more visible security. more canine teams. even more security for people on the tsa precheck. but we've heard about this tone officials are trying to set. for the third time in the last couple days, either the fbi or the department of homeland security secretary said they know of no paris-style threat here. this latest statement comes from the homeland security secretary jeh johnson, who said we must guard against actions in congress that are misdirected and counterproductive. steve? >> pete williams, thank you for that. >>> and before we break, let's c

joining me now, our justice correspondent, pete williams. let's start with the basics here. 2-1 decision in a circuit, and they didn't ask for the full circuit to weigh in. they went ahead with this. >> right. >> doesn't that mean they want to fast-track it to the supreme court? >> it sure does. this is very unusual that the justice department, with less than 24 hours after getting an appeals court decision decide what it was going to do. and it maybe in part what josh earnest said that the government is convinced of the rightness of its argument, but more than anything, it's a desire to get this settled while the president is still in the white house. the other option would have been to go to the full fifth circuit court of appeals and try to get them to rehear the case. but they wouldn't do that unless they were pretty confident they were going to win, and they had a lot of time. they don't have a lot of time. so they took the other option, which is to go right to the supreme court. >> well, isn't it possible that justice roberts says, boy

pete williams, thank you very much. tom costello, one more check-in with you for those flying domestically. what can they expect in terms of the old phrase, leave extra time? >> well, i think probably that's it. for the most part, we are talking about a normal process going through the nation's airports. i think that you may see a little more swabbing of hands to see if anybody has explosive residue on their hands. a little more in terms of roving canines, more dog patrols. as i was at reagan national airport this week, i saw a dog patrol literally stationed at, standing there at the checkpoint where people go through. i've seen roving dogs, many, many, many times here in washington and elsewhere in the country. that's a first time i have seen one just stationary, staying there throughout most of the morning. so i think that the whole system's kind of on a heightened sense right now, but for the most part it's going to be pretty much travel as we have seen for the last 10 or 11 years since 9/11. the one point i will mak

thanks so much, pete williams. >>> u.s. congressman michael mccaul, the chairman of the homeland security committee it says said the threats across new york and washington should be taken seriously. that's his call. irchlts always worried about new york. i travel to new york periodically to check with the nypd and fbi, state and locals. new york, washington, d.c., they're crying out for attacks right now in these two cities. these are the two biggest tarts in the united states. i think our sense of security has heightened, but i'm very worried, when you look at the number of arrests that have taken place, the 1,000 investigations in at 50 states that the fbi is conducting, and the return of foreign fighters to the united states, all ticking time bombs. this is a very high-threat environment. >> those comments echo a similar warning earlier this week from dianne feinstein. >> i've never been more concerned. i read the intelligence faithfully. isil is not contained, isil is expanding. they have just put out a video saying it

joining me now is nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, can you fill us in on whatever you've been hearing? >> well, kate, no, not really. my sole contact here at the federal authorities and this is very much in the hands of the colorado springs police. earlier, they had not asked for any assistance from the fbi, but a short time ago they did, and the fbi can provide additional manpow manpower, but the whole operation here at this point is totally in the hands of the colorado springs police. this is all happening within their area, they're the ones in charge. it may be that once this is all over, that the fbi can assist in helping to reconstruct what happened inside that building, which is a specialty the fbi has, and also looking into the background of this person, who as far as we know from all the reports, came into the building for some reason today, with a high-powered rifle and has been shooting outside the building. we don't know whether he also shot inside the building. we've heard nothing really of substance really about what
