her name is jeanne peters bakers.strickland. he has been in prison for over 40 years in missouri, since he was 18 years old. but the speaker's office, which prosecuted him in that case, they have determined that he didn't do it. that he shouldn't have been prosecuted. it wasn't him. the case against him was based primarily on a single witness who recanted her testimony. who says it wasn't him. she sought desperately to have him released. two other men convicted in conjunction with a crime also say he did not do it. the prosecutors own formal review of the case found that that case was brought against him in profound error. we've reported on this case a few times in the last few weeks. closely following reporting from the kansas city star. what is actually astonishing to me though is that this story is still out there now for us to still be talking about it. that remarkable press conference by the prosecutor, jane peters baker's, that was 39 days ago. that was me tenth. he's still in jail. our justice system is adversa

peter baker, doesn't tomorrow really begin to normalize up this relationship? >> well, first of all, it is worth remembering what senator graham says, when he says that this wouldn't happen under president trump this actually did happen under president trump. in the last weeks and months of his administration, the solar winds cyber attack on the united states for which president trump did nothing and said nothing about in public. the extent senator graham is concerned about an american president being tough on putin this would not be the first moment when a president has confronted a president in that circumstance. we'll see what president biden says tomorrow and how he confronts president putin and what kind of a tone he takes. a lot of people are looking to see whether he can stand up to president putin and how. remember this is an interesting timing for a summit in which russia has been provoking the west in recent weeks in a demonstrative way both through repression of its own dissenters at home by embracing belarus which just forced down a plane in order t

>> and peter baker, this procedural vote on hr-1, it seems destined to fail. there's a lot of intrigue on the democratic side as progressives are hoping that opposition from senate republicans could push joe manchin to agree to a one-time filibuster suspension to get this one thing through. >> reporter: yeah, they've been hoping that joe manchin would change his mind on that and joe manchin has said again and again that he won't. so, you know, at some point you're going to have to hear whether or not he's going to live up to what he says. the idea here, of course, is to put republicans on the spot and put joe manchin on the spot. he has said not only does he not want to get rid of the filibuster but doesn't want to weaken it, which he could do with the one-time legislation. he will be put to the test in that sense. it's an awkward week in that sense for him, obviously in the democratic caucus where he's faced a lot of pressure, especially from the progressive left, which is frustrated with him, seeing him as an obstacle almost akin to many republicans. but he

. >> joining me is peter baker, michael steele and casey hunt. donald trump, do american presidents talk about their political opponents while they are overseas getting ready for a summit? >> not a lot. that was an old-fashioned rule that went by the wayside the last four years. presidents historically focus on their international policies and do not bring their domestic rivalries into the fray. but president biden is trying to reestablish relationships with allies. but you are right, these days there is no real edge, no border, no boundary between domestic and international politics. it follows the president wherever he goes and he brings it with him. >> and michael, between president trump's role on january 6, republicans are questioning the election and all of these states passing discriminatory voting restrictions. is it a surprise that our allies would be surprised whether the trump dominated party will get back in power, or at mid terms or even trump being re-elected. >> they are concerned. republicans, certainly donald trump candidacy, coul

and correspondent for "the new york times" peter baker is with us. >> after the, working together andfrastructure bill immediately after that's announced, nancy pelosi said it has to be both bills at the same time and then you have the president saying the same, then it blows up and the president backs off and says there is no linkage, then you have administration official going on not saying whether there's linkage or not. so where are we in this process as a new work week begins? >> the problem for democrats is that biden may have backed off of his comment but that doesn't mean that senator sanders has, nancy pelosi has. many democrats are still seeing a linkage even if the president doesn't directly say i will veto this if i don't get that. the trick is the republicans are linking it on the other side. some republicans saying i won't go for the infrastructure bill if i don't get commitment from the democrats that they won't support a reconciliation package for this other spending that the president wants. the two are, in fact, on these parallel and sometimes intersecting paths and

peter baker. peter, good morning. should we be surprised at the size of the vote, perhaps.lly in recent years to think of the court in the same way we think of congress. just another political institution. in fact we refer to it as a 6-3 court like it was a mini legislative body with political bodies. that is a relatively new phenomenon and republican appointees who turned out to be liberal and democratic appointees who are more moderate and conservative than expected. in recent years we've seen a far more, you know, predictable set of opinions from justices depending on who they were appointed by. this reminds us, not a political body in the same way that congress is. different equities as justices see them and they are willing to think outside of the ideological and partisan box at times. that doesn't mean at amy coney barrett and brett kavanaugh are liberals, no, they're going to rule with liberals but they see legal arguments that don't fit their view of the law. in this case, we're talking about not getting to the merits of the case. but whether or not the case should

joining me now is peter alexander and new york times white house correspondent peter baker. ter alexander. let's talk about how the white house is planning to sell this. >> andrea, as you noted, the president landing in lacross, wisconsin. one's a rural area and one is particularly hard hit by one of those infrastructural challenges that the country faces right now and separately it faces a senate seat for which they'll be in 2022. so the president's focus today according to white house officials is going to be not so much about the process of doing this, but really about the policy and the people, the real-life impact of these infrastructure efforts, this bipartisan deal as you noted with $1.2 trillion that it would be directing around the country right now. particularly in wisconsin an official was detailing some of the figures for me and roughly half of the 160,000 pipes in that state are believed to be contaminated by lead. beyond that, they say there is roughly a thousand bridges in the state that are structurally deficient and all in an effort to have an impact by real

thank you very much, peter baker. >> and joining us now is john bolton.tration and bush 41 and 43 administrations. what can president biden expect to gain in this meeting with vladimir putin? >> i think this meeting is premature. i don't think biden understands what his objectives with russia are or how to achieve them. there is a long list of potential disagreements and conflicts with russia. having a meeting where you go down a list and say we raised russian hacking interference and ukraine. i think putin is a wily, experienced, well prepared leader. he will have his objectives. i am a little worried, frankly, that the biden administration is more process than substance and will leave us vulnerable. i think you can always have phone conversations. i think this meeting is probably premature. >> with all due respect, was donald trump prepared for a meeting with vladimir putin? >> of course not. he didn't prepare for meetings in any traditional sense because he didn't feel he needed to. he was good at sizing people up in 30 seconds or so and he would deal

the two most meaningful books that i have read this year are peter baker and susan glasser's book on james baker and your book on nancy reagan yet these both focus on a presidency 30 years ago. what is it about the reagan's president reagan nancy reagan that still intrigues and captivates interests today? well, you know was the whole. unlikelihood of his story that you know this man could come out of hollywood and really sees you know that he'd be elected governor, but also that he would he would dominate. politics in not only his era but you know for a generation to come the idea imagine. any political candidate today who could win 49 states? and certainly his policies. there are a lot of people who will draw a straight line from regular policies to a lot of the you know, less less attractive themes in our politics today. but where i think the analogies? fall apart is that ronald reagan's gift i believe? was his ability to make the country believe in itself. just the kind of sheer optimism that he was able to convey and again it just to me at least feels so at odds with everything ab

i'm jerry baker in for neil cavuto and this is "your world." let's start with peter doocy with more on the message the white house is sending. peter? >> jerry, good afternoon. the message has changed a little bit in recent weeks. the white house is no longer leading with the line that there is no evidence available that these extended unemployment benefits, $300 a week in many places said that they're keeping people home. now they say they don't know. >> the benefits, are they doing the right thing or the wrong thing? >> we have continued to implement or continuing to advocate to implement these unemployment benefits for the remainder of their tenure, which is just a couple of months. we don't actually know because the data doesn't exist what the implementation of the impact in these states is. >> republican critics argued that they've seen plenty of proof as job openings go unfilled in states where the $300 a week is set to continue through september as originally planned before vaccinations were widely available and before most parts of the country started lifting
