i want to bring in business reporter brian chung and peter baker is back with us.at's the big question here. are we going to get another interest rate hike. help us understand how all this plays into each other. >> market pricing after the jobs report came out does imply the fed is going to go with the larger three quarter increase in their next meeting in the first week of november. what that tells us is that cost are going continue to get more expensive for households and businesses. the business side is interesting with respect to labor market, because if businesses don't want to take a bank loan out to build a second location and hire more people, they might take job postings down or fire some people. the labor market doesn't look like that right now with the unemployment rate at 3.5%. that's the lowest we have seen in over 50 years. but that picture could change as the fed continues to hike interest rates. >> we heard this from vaughn. it might become the gop messaging. they face their own set of risks come november. obviously, for the democrats, it's inflatio

. >> let's bring in ali vitale, barbara mcquaid, and peter baker, chief white house correspondent fores". ali, i want to get to this new news you brought to us out of the january 6th committee. there had been all of this tuck about an interim report. that would require a vote of the committee. so it could be complicated. this is what caught my eye from your new reporting. there is a real possibility we could see some new information. what might that look like? >> yeah. that's exactly right, chris. this is a committee that has shown so much publicly in its hearing but still has things on the cutting room floor to help americans understand what happened january 6th and the roles that were played by the former president, as well as other people in his orbit. and so it's entirely possible that while we won't see an official interim report for the reasons you laid out and frankly where we are on the calendar before election day, it is entirely possible that the committee could release an unofficial interim report that looks like new video to tweet out. or maybe it looks like a staff report

this morning, ali vitali, "washington post" investigations reporter and an msnbc contributor, and peter baker and msnbc political analyst, and harry litman. harry, let me start things off with you if we could. we got this letter in from the former president responding, in fact, to the subpoena from the january 6th committee, same playbook, saying that the election was stolen, saying it was a witch-hunt, accusing the committee not working into certain things that we felt as if were outstanding from the 2020 election. what do you make of the response from the former president and how do you see this going next considering what we've heard from him so far? >> same playbook, longer playbook. it's quite a screen and takes a while to get through. it's like someone standing up on a bus and starting to scream randomly, except the one thing he doesn't scream is the one thing everyone wants to hear, will he or will he not testify. i think this is just part and parcel of a strategy of giving excuses or making un -- making conditions that the committee would never meet and in other words, not testifying.

you know peter baker recently published a book, the new york times and other really esteemed reporterngton post do it all the time. i think that if anything, that is action able and incredibly hot, hot button issue gets reported in the moment, but they do get context and they do get recollections from people who there after the fact while they're reporting the book. and so i think that i think there could be a more productive dialog between maybe the public and journalists and educating people about just how the whole system works. but i don't think that reporters in general are holding on to the most important details for books. what kind of books did you review and did you have a choice as to which books you were going to? i did have a choice. 90% of the time, the critics there at the times did too, as does our ron charles of the post, he looks ahead to what's coming out and decides what what he wants to cover. yeah, that was one of the that was one of the joys of the job was if there was something i was interested in, i could raise my hand for it. and if it wasn't already claimed b

. >> joining me now is peter baker and lisa rubin, legal analyst for the rachel maddow show.have you both as always. after nine hearings at over 20 hours of testimony? the committee subpoena donald trump 21 months out of the january 6th attack. peter, was the decision to subpoena the former president purely symbolic? could it alter the outcome of the house committees investigation? >> i think it is mainly making a point. it's making the point that the one essential figure in all of this is donald trump. he hasn't -- he attacks the committee for being partisan, for being part of a hoax. he says that the election was stolen. he hasn't really ever answered a lot of the questions that people have about his actions leading up to january 6th and on the day of. rather than answer those, he has stressed engaged in partisan muscling of his own. i think that is the strategy here. he likes to say he would like to talk. we wrote in our book that during the mueller hearings he said that as well. of course, he didn't testify. his own lawyers don't believe that he would keep a story straigh
