for perspective, let's turn to cnn analyst peter bergen on how often the u.s. carries out the drone attacks. >> this is part of a campaign that has been going on since president obama assumed office. there have been 91 drone strikes so far under president obama, and 15 other kinds of cruise missile strikes. so more than 100 taken together, this has cost the group dearly. >> now, including today's attack, fred, there have been eight attacks by drone in yemen by the united states this year. back to you. >> and sunlen, several civilians were killed in today's attack. do we know more about those circumstances? >> sources in the region say it's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. these three civilians were in a car that was right by that pickup truck that was targeted. it's worth recalling, of course, president obama about this time last year, in may of 2013, reorganized united states drone policy. you know, really addressing this issue of collateral civilian damage. now, he really defended the use of the strategy in counterterrorism efforts by the

. >>> cnn national security analyst peter bergen calls this president obama's war. peter, tell us why is this president obama's war? why do you think that? >> under president george w. bush there was only one. under president obama there have been add least 90. it's something, a campaign that president obama launched, as elise mentioned. it came in the context of the failed plot to bring down a plane over detroit, the underwear bomb plot, and u.s. officials are very concerned about this group which keeps trying to build bombs that are very hard to detect and trying to get them onto american aircraft. >> peter, what do you believe is behind the acceleration and how is it different than the drone strikes in pakistan under president bush? >> the acceleration has been going on really since 2011. this has been a sustained campaign. the fact that we've had two confirmed drone strikes over the weekend isn't that unusual. we've seen drone strikes even happen in different parts of the country in yemen on the same day. so what i think is different is this large-scale u.s. yeme

. >> peter better bergen, let's talk about fort hood and what happened back in 2009, specifically november, when u.s. army major general nidal hasan opened fire and killed fellow soldiers, injured many others. last year he was convicted, 13 counts of murder, 32 counts of attempted murder. he admitted that he wanted to target u.s. soldiers, he said who were about to deploy to afghanistan to protect the taliban and the taliban's leadership. that's what he said, even though he didn't testify directly that's what he said during the course of various statements that he made. yet for some reason this was not formally categorized as an act of terror. why wasn't it an act of terror? it was sort of seen by law enforcement as workplace violence. >> you know, wolf, he was tried in a military court. he wasn't tried in a conventional court. my understanding of military law is that terrorism is not a charge that he would necessarily have been convicted under. it was a very straightforward murder trial. he admitted that he did it. it wasn't really necessary to go to terrorism charges. and by the way, he

i asked peter bergen, our national security analyst here at cnn, an expert on terrorism, he's calledpresident obama's war, this drone war, as it is. >> i think without getting into details of these kinds of thing, i think it's fair to say this. the united states remains committed to defending the country, remains committed to degrading and defeating al qaeda and those groups around al qaeda that do harm to the united states, wolf. it has been, from the outset of this administration, and who are authorized by the way to carry out these kinds of operations because we're at war. >> and the president remains as committed to launching these drone strikes today as he was three, four years ago? >> again, i don't want to get into the details of the techniques that are used here. what i can say is that the united states remains committed to doing what it has to do to keep these groups from acting as the united states and in this case you have a group and indeed in that march 29th video, a group that has said expressly that has the intention and we've seen it have the capability to react again

peter bergen, our terrorism analyst, is with us as well. hearing? u.s. officials still skeptical. what are you hearing? >> still a lot of questions, but saudi officials telling me today, commenting publicly for the first time that the body of the saudi militant who's linked to aqap who was killed in this firefight with yemeni commandos on sunday night that that body was transported to saudi arabia and that that that's where the dna tests are actually happening. the saudi government officials would not comment as to whether they believed it was him, but they did tell me this could very well be a high-ranking, top-tier saudi aqap target. clearly, he fits that description. but nobody is saying yet because the dna tests could take a couple of days, could take a couple of weeks. a lot of the saudis i've been speaking with privately, they hope it's him, but again, they're not ready to make that comment just yet. >> peter, for the saudis, this is pretty personal given his record not only trying to attack the united states, but going after high-ran

cnn national security analyst peter bergen joins us, he's on the phone. peter, put this strike into context for us and talk about the importance. and is there anything that you know or you can tell about the, let's siee, the three senior members killed in this attack? >> we don't know who those people were, and we may not know for some period of time. in terms of the kind of the context here, president obama has authorized around 100 drone and cruise missile strikes since he assumed office. there was only one drone strike in yemen in the two presidential george w. bush terms, so it really shows the focus used to be on pakistan and al qaeda members there, the focus is largely shifted to yemen. we're not seeing any drone strikes in pakistan over the last several months, whereas we've seen eight drone strikes in yemen since the beginning of the year, victor. >> so, peter, could this strike have been tied to the video that surfaced recently? >> you know, i think that's very hard to tell. you know, we don't know for sure where the video was taken. barbara shaw
