peter bergen: i'm very skeptical they have changed. within the context of islamic law is the modifier they use for everything. whether it's women's rights or independent media. their understanding of sharia law is quite different from most other muslims. and that -- it's really a rural understanding of what women might be ableto work in a clinic that treats only female patients. or maybe teach in school, for girls, only up to the age of 12. this is what we're going to see. and it's not going to be that different. yes, they may have changed a little bit around the edges. but they may -- allow television because now they are pretty adept at propaganda in the old days they banned television. so i don't see it. and one thing i think that we should be looking at is a lot of people were released from bagram air force base prison. the taliban prisoners, al qaeda prisoners, these are huge force multipliers not just the 5,000 released that vivian mentioned as a result of the peace agreement. so you know, and to pick up about something that pete

that's cnn national security analyst peter bergen. peter, as you know, biden's national security adviser says there's already an acute isis threat in afghanistan. on top of everything else we're now having to deal with these concerns about isis. it sounds as though this is a very precarious, dangerous situation that's just one incident away from tipping over the edge and becoming just an awful mess. what can you tell us about this concern about isis and the relationship with al qaeda and what that means for our forces on the ground there. >> well, the isis group in afghanistan is known as isis-k. karasan is an ancient name for the region. they are fighting the taliban or has fought the taliban on numerous occasions. and often these are people who were in the taliban who kind of slapped on the isis patch and they are the biggest, baddest guys on the block. they have unfortunately been able to attack almost at will in kabul. they particularly attack the shia minority. we've seen them attack schools, mosques. they have no compunction abou

. >> let's talk now with cnn national security analyst peter bergen. ter, the president is vowing a strike on isis-k. what would a u.s. response look like, do you think? >> well, i think -- i think that's kind of the ludicrous assertion. we're pulling out every troops, all u.s. troops and our intelligence assets are almost entirely gone. so where do you engineer that strike from? is it from qatar where clarissa was just reporting from? well, that's over a thousand miles away. how do you gather intelligence without having any assets on the ground and operating in a hostile country essentially. think about the bin laden raid in pakistan where the united states had a substantial diplomatic and intelligence presence and took a decade to engineer. so i think this claim of striking back is simply, you know, it's wishful thinking at the highest order. >> so then what is it? does it -- is it just sort of to you an assertion where he's trying to show strength after having been hit? >> yeah, basically. i mean, look, you can imagine drone strikes, we certainly in

. >> joining me now to discuss the threats posed in afghanistan is senior national analyst peter bergennow peter, as many of you know has written extensively about the middle east. and including the rise and fall of osama bin laden. i want to start with obviously president biden authorized that unmanned air strike against an isis-k planner in eastern afghanistan. one of the things you've always heard from afghanistan of isis officials is how difficult they are to track. obviously with so many released from prison over the last couple days, that's complicated factors. what does it tell you that the u.s. was able to at least identify one individual tied to this attack? >> i think, phil, it's interesting that it took place in the nangarhar province in eastern afghanistan. this is where isis-k came to power several years ago. it's sort of been a stronghold for them. i imagine the intelligence used to carry out this strike was not something that was developed yesterday, given the fact that isis-k has long had a presence in that particular province. but it does also raise the issue, you know,

wants want to get perspective from peter bergen who spent decades chronicling afghanistan. raveled in afghanistan together. also retired general mark kimmitt, who served as assistant secretary of state during the second bush administration. you wreet today, the route of the afghan defense and security forces will go down in history as one of the greatest military defeats of the past century. in the end, despite the billions of dollars, the 20 years of training by u.s. special forces and others, what happened? >> well, i think what we couldn't calculate, what we couldn't measure is the fact that the average afghan soldier was surrounded by corruption, didn't really have a cause that bound him to either his unit or his country, and candidly, the taliban had a tremendous strategic communications campaign that kept their people together and the cy-ops executed on the average unit inside the afghan military caused them to either give up or melt away into the sunset. >> peter, the way the u.s., you know, botched the evacuation of american allied citizens, clearly didn't expect thi
