peter chin hong, an infectious disease specialist with ucsf. good morning, doctor chin hong, thank you for joining us early this morning. there is such great concern about this virus. six people dying in washington state, many more infected here in the bay area. as journalists we're giving this information but you also don't want to create that panic for people. how concerned should people be right here in the bay area? >> i think my concern is probably mild at this point for getting really sick from the virus. i think my concern is moderate that the virus is already here in the community. but there are a lot of things that we could do to sort of protect ourselves from it. >> so let's talk about that. we talk about the hand washing, how important that is. we're seeing stores selling out of disinfecting whites and bleach and all of that. what should people be doing? >> is -- i think the most important thing is hand washing and it is low tech and inexpensive but many studies show viruses could be prevented by the simple act of hand washing and it

peter chin-hong, an infectious disease specialist and professor of medicine at ucsf. thank you for joining us. >> my pleasure, thank you. >> we have to start with the biggest number just come out an i guess only a matter of time but the u.s. now has 82,000 confirmed cases pushing us just past china, past italy, meaning we now have the most number of cases in the world. does this surprise you that it happened so quickly? >> it doesn't surprise me at all. it was something we were fearing all along and i would say that that's an underestimate because we haven't rolled out enough testing in the united states in general so what you are seeing is the tip of the iceberg. >> all right. so then based on models you are seeing and the testing, what do you think the real number might be, at least a range? >> i think it's really hard to say. you are seeing the severe cases going into the hospital and testing in the community. right now, testing strategy in the u.s. i would say in general has been very disparate meaning that different states have different capacities and doing diff

joins us live from hong kong thailand 1st how are the numbers looking there. not good peter thailand numbers have jumped drastically 188 new cases 30 percent more than before. the for the previous day actually cases are now up to 600 so far thailand had managed to stave off a rise in cases by carefully blocking its borders very early on when the outbreak 1st came out in china they had put quite harsh restrictions of travelers from high risk country thinking that they could block out much of the infection but it's somehow they have had to still manage the rise in infections that we're seeing mainly because of domestic cases so a scenario that they hadn't really prepared for a 1000 most of the cases that we've seen were a rise from a boxing match where 5000 people had attended they then dispersed across the country earlier in the month many of them had not been tested then it came out that many of them i had coronavirus and now we're seeing the impact of this the health ministry has put a partial lockdown on the capital as you said but they're warning the younger people tellin

thailand and other parts of southeast asia joins us live here on al-jazeera in hong kong what's the picture across your region. peter in thailand as you mentioned cases have spiked by 188 in one day that means in one day the number of infections in thailand have increased about 30 percent there are now nearly 600 infections the country from the start of very vigilantly protect its borders topping people from high risk countries from entering when the outbreak 1st started months ago now they're seeing a rise in domestic cases and this is mainly due to an event in bangkok about $5000.00 people attended a boxing match earlier this month the people spread out across the country following that and people at that boxing match were said to have been infected the coronavirus and so the spike we're seeing right now is as a result of that the health ministry says most of the new cases in bangkok are in bangkok and from young people who haven't heated their calls to start social the social distancing and stop social activities despite a partial lockdown of the capital in singapore the government is struggling what they're call
