today's press conference, the mayor urged pg&e to settle those lawsuits quickly as residents work to rebuild their lives. now, the mayor says there is still much work to do rebuilding homes and infrastructure and a hole in the heart of the city that exists physically and emotionally. >> we know that nothing, no amount of money, no amount of apologizes will ever bring back the citizens we lost, the home has that were destroyed, the family heir looms that were burned, the communities that existed before september 9, 2010. >> reporter: even with this money, the mayor says the city will continue to seek an additional settlement when the california public utilities commission fines pg&e. the september 2010 explosion took the lives of eight residents, destroying 38 homes and damaging another 70. that explosion is considered one of the largest natural disasters in u.s. history and today city leaders are hoping this announcement will help the city and neighbors move one step closer to recovery. cbs 5 will continue coverage on this story, so stay tuned for our later newscasts at 5:00 and 6:00

there were 40,000 people that called pg and e about their gas. that means they call turned off their gas? did they need to do that? when do you have to? when there is a problem. how long did you think it takes pg and e to get out and turn it back on? 45,000 people. days weeks, may be a month. who has seen this in the streets. a lot of muck is in there is it's full of dirt and weeds you turn it to the right to tighten it and left to loosen it. your home work you have to look at your house, pop open the lid, look in there see what's going on in there it's not nice and clean like this. who has seen this around their house? everybody. each meter has a shut off. you want to find out where your gas meter is. you can keep track of your usage but you will know how to shut it off. here's the shut off. i have some tools up here, you can look at these. any hardware store has these. they fit on this and it allows you to turn off the gas. when we talk about the wheels it's these on top. if you have a broken pipe. they will spin like mad. when it's daylight, g

pg&e is out here trying to fix the problem. police say the woman driving the car was arrested on suspicion of dui. witnesses to the crash say she walked away without a scratch. it happened about 3:00 this morning when the driver was headed northbound on washington avenue. she veered off the roadway and hit the pole. pg&e cut off power. it's affecting two businesses. customers saw the accident unfold and then they were eating in the dark. >> are you going to try to make some meals without using cooking. >> we can cook. we just can't use the electricity. no sodas, no coffee, nothing. >> now, nick decided to close his restaurant for the time being. you can see him standing out here with some of his employees. the restaurant is completely in the dark. it's going to be that way for some time. pg&e crews say they don't know exactly when the power will be going back on, but they think it's going to be much later in the morning. if we look over here, you can see the flares set up and cops directing traffic. this is going to take time b

at any rate, the tree company folks are out here right now working with pg&e. they are trying to cut this thing. they have now released it from the wiring so those are the phone lines right now that are also knocked out. pg&e tells me those are the big wires on the bottom that the workers are untangling right now. and then the high voltage lines which are up above were snapped when this came down. if there is a silver lining in this neighborhood, it's that the force of the tree falling against the power lines was not enough to break the poles. these guys tell me this happens this time of year a lot up in these rural areas around the bay area. this is a place that was exposed. there was a lot of wind up here as i say and i don't want to get hit by a falling tree. it toppled this one over and there are a number of them up here. neighbors have come out at times and asked pg&e to trim some more but they say this is probably not a great time to be doing it. we have emergency calls to get to. so right now we are told 42 customers without power. this is going to be go
