jim, actually it's starting again in pinellas, right? >> yeah the rain is just starting to really work its way you can see on skytower radar that big mess of rain has been slowly inching its way towards the coastline all morning long. if you're washing good day with dave osterberg it is showing out getting closer and closer we see individual cells that would make its way on shore. now we're getting into that time where we will start to see more and more persistent rain and embedded in that will be some heavier cells. in fact, you can see basically from clearwater down the coastline, there you see some very heavy rain. these tropical downpours individual cells are racing on to the north. then north, northwest right now probably about 30 to 35 miles an hour. down through the south, manate and sarasota, this is just off your coastline. just starting to work its way up towards longboat and anna maria. down towards venice. some of this brushing along the coastline as you get into central sarasota county. but kind of take that big wide view an

candace mccowan live in pinellas county. thank you. >>> just north of the bay area are really taking a beating. >> reporter: we sent jeff patterson up to cedar key with the storm right in the thick of things. we can see the wind even behind you now, jeff. we saw your reports earlier. you've experienced a lot we've seen pretty strong gusts of wind here. i have my handheld wind meter here. i've been keeping an eye on the wind gusts. it's sustained at 20 to 25 miles per hour. i did see one gust above 25 miles per hour. we saw a gust above 30 miles per hour earlier. we are seeing pretty high winds in cedar key. there's a mandatory evacuation order the approach out to cedar key, a long, 20-mile approach was covered by water just a few minutes ago. we have been keeping a close eye on things here. the water behind us going down. i do want to show you some video we shot maybe an hour, hour or so ago when the water was much higher here. we understand low tide tonight in this area will be at 9:30 p.m. the high tide is expected to be a

other parts of pinellas not too bad. and then farther south into manatee and sarasota county, and we have batches of rain there. not as widespread. the problem is, we've already two days, especially near the coast. and now i'm expecting to see more rain. look at the rainfall potential today. this is just one computer model but i think it's giving you a good trend as to what i believe is going to happen. you see the red shaded area, some spots between now and 9:00 p.m. could see 3 more inches of rainfall. and now the blue color, that's about an inch of rain. most will see about an inch. and there will be some spots that see higher totals than that. especially for areas along and north of i-4. notice it drier the farther south and east that you go. right now, winds have been quite strong. not as strong as i have seen them. earlier we were seeing wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. and these are the blue numbers here. we're seeing wind gusts now at 30 miles per hour. the problem with that is that the ground is soggy. three

so far so good, we had a crash in pinellas backups. the incident we talked about at 275 and northbound exit to bearss, stalled van, has already cleared so we're looking great on i-275. right at bearss, up to speed in both directions from the apex all the way down to i-4. this is what it looks like on i-4 at 301 traffic still pretty light, we are not seeing any delays from lakeland all the way into downtown tampa. that drive is taking just about 20 minutes or so. your drive on the veterans

that continues through pinellas, hillsborough, polk county. there may be a shower but not the consistent rain this we saw earlier or that they're seeing in manat desoto county. lighter rain falling in highlands county. i did this with the radar. i looked back since wednesday, put the radar estimated rainfall totals. you can see the bullseye in pinellas county. i picked out a few spots, 10 inches to 12 inches. we've had rain gauges that have picked up more than 20 inches. we have some sports 10 inches or more into manatee and sarasota. lighter rainfall totals in that's where the tidal surge was higher during the morning. looking out at the freedom plaza, 1 inch of rain, still coming down, gusty winds out of the southwest, 10 to 15 miles per hour, sustain add winds, gusting 25 to 30. the wind speeds will continue to weaken and lighten up the further away that hermine moves. it's going to stay a tropical storm until it heads to the atlantic ocean. rain chances will be in the forecast tex hours. they will be taper thing off after about 4:00. the b

pinellas had a lot to deal with here. >> they have mark. and the winds have picked up here at clearwater beach. they continue to batter the beach. we actually had to move back because some of the water was coming over the sea walls. some roads being closed here just behind us in clearwater saw flooding that caused some problems for drivers in tarpon springs at least three cars died trying to cross flooded intersections. now those drivers went through and got water in their engines. all the rain, 11 inches in 24 hours, some spots, it overwhelmed sewer systems in clearwater and largo. that forced waste water to bubble up from manholes. on the beach the story was high winds and large waves. ignoring the dangers and swimming. others just came out to see the storm's power. >> pretty breezy. i've surprised there's a lot of stuff blowing around. a lot of waves and wind. really nothing bad. >> just within the last few moments here officials in clearwater police patrolling these roads here and trying to get people away from where the water has come

more rain in pinellas county. this is the courtney campbell, the howard frankland, both gusty winds going all the way down 19, 275, through pinellas county and it looks like i know we have flooding in shore acres this morning. you've got another round of heavy rain heading into that area. as you go eastward, you're all the way to plant city where we've been showing you pictures of some damage that they had overnight at plant city. southward on 39 it's been raining on and off all morning long. and about an hour or two ago, we throw moisture onshore from bradenton to sarasota. i mean, look at this heavy rain and how about the lightning strikes as well? that will give you an idea of some strong thunderstorms with the persistent rain band just moving onshore and just this area alone, radar frame we're looking at, we've got about 100 lightning strikes this morning. copious amounts of moisture. this tropical, this feeder band is not moving much. see how it's going all the way to the southwest? the problem moves, we're g

obviously the advice to you in hillsborough is the same that my advice was in pinellas. not a good time to be on the road. let this band go by. tampa cam is looking down kennedy. not much traffic. that's good. in the distance is the bay and n the distance is dark clouds and heavy rain. i mean, the sun doesn't set for another hour and a half and look how dark it is, even at 6:17 in the afternoon. just updated the satellite loop and the presentation of hermine, you know, still getting better organized and certainly the development of an eye feature south of apalachicola and we are on the bad side. this is the nasty side of any tropical storms and when storms intensify obviously the wind field kind of spreads out. the impacts increase and for a count 1 hurricane this is pretty large. this is about one and a half or -- one and a half times the here's the satellite radar presentation of the storm headig up towards the big bend. it's going to be critical in tallahassee, and i think the storm will stay a little bit eat of downtown tallahassee, and that's a big deal. because eve
