what about the folks out here in antioch and pittsburg? as we mentioned, this has been ongoing hair, the struggle over what is going on in the police department with various allegations and investigations unfolding. now there are arrests. we heard from some of the folks who have been pushing for the reform movement trying to get progress in making this police department work better for the city of antioch here. we have some early reaction and their thoughts today. >> today, for me means that all the work of the community, from being on the front lines, coming to the city hall for years or decades saying do something , it is a fruit of that labor, finally. >> my only hope is that something good comes from it. we can use antioch as an example for the rest of the country, in a sense, where we know this is going on and it is not just isolated to antioch or pittsburg. >> so what happens next for the pittsburg and antioch police departments? still many unanswered questions. in antioch they are without a police chief and a city manager. interim f

also celebrate, they say. >> jodi, the antioch police chief hasn't made a formal statement, nor the pittsburg police chief. the mayor has been vocal the last few months. did he respond today? >> reporter: that's right. he has been incredibly vocal, but he has been unavailable to talk on camera today. however, he did issue a statement. he called this a very dark day for the city of antioch, that folks that were trusted to uphold the law have been arrested, allegedly for breaching the law. he also said in his statement that reforming the antioch police department is not anti-police, but pro-citizen. he said this is just the beginning of the end of this process. that's a statement he put out. we also heard from the antioch police officers association. they also released a statement saying they are very saddened by what has happened. they also say they're committed to continuing quality service for the citizens of antioch, but also committed to supporting their members. >> a lot of people hoping for change within those police departments. jodi hernandez, thank you so much. we'll see your live rep

a victim was driven to the century plaza center in pittsburg, or someone call 911.ll no word on what started a fire that tore through an abandoned building in pittsburg earlier this morning. fire crews who entered the building were pulled out due collapse concerns firefighters estate on the scene for much of the day. one nearby home was evacuated. no injuries were reported. police are investigating after at least two businesses were burglarized in oakland. chef octavio diaz is the owner of the agave uptown restaurant and he showed these photos showing the damage left behind after the break in. the thieves left with $10,000 in to money and caused $50,000 in damage to the restaurant. there was also a break-in at the kapor center for social impact, which is on the same building on franklin street in broadway. in the east members got her last chance to tell oakland leaders what is important to them in the search for the next police chief. the city held its last two public forms today. community members want the new chief's main focus to be on public safety and enforcing

five antioch police officers and five from pittsburg have been indicted.y're accused of excess ty force, egging each other on to use violence, sharing photos with each other of people they injured. one of the men is accused of excessive force with his canine. antioch police were already in the midst of air racist text message scandal with more than half their officers on leave because of that, and their chief retired this month. the acting chief said tonight that this announcement is disheartening. fed up antioch residents say the arrests are just a step in the right direction. >> the voices will be louder, the screams will be louder, the pain will come out. that's what we need to heal. to heal, we need to let it out. >> i'm not celebrating. i'm simply acknowledging that officers are not above the law. they are not god. and i'm thankful that a few of them went to jail. >> antioch's mayor called this a dark day in the city's history and the beginning of the end of this long process. >>> tonight we've learned san jose police will be on campus at james lick h

in total ten current and former pittsburg and antioch police officers have been charged with federal offenses including violating civil rights and cheating on training courses. today city leaders in antioch have been in a closed door meeting discussing next steps including whether to terminate the arrested officers. a city member weighed in on that discussion. >> the city has made the decision to terminate officers involved in any type of corruption, then i would certainly support that. >> many people are calling on the police department to clarify how many of the implicated officers are still on city payroll and what that means for current police staffing levels. the police department, which is believed to be severely short staffed, is holding a hiring workshop this weekend. >>> back to the south bay now where a san jose police officer shot in the line of duty continues to recover. we're learning about the extent of her injuries. meantime, the man accused of shooting her makes his first court appearance and documents shed light on why officers were originally called to that home. ou

the antioch and pittsburg police department. we did reach out to the fbi in san francisco.ld us that they would provide information at a press conference that is scheduled for 3:30 this afternoon in the city. jodi did speak to the attorney of one of the officers that was arrested and his client it was a forcible arrest as the fbi used flashbangs and bullhorns and he called that, quote, completely unnecessary, says his clients would have surrendered if asked. in the course of the investigation in the past the feds did seize the officers' cell phones and they stumbled against racist and homophobic texts between dozens of antioch cops. a judge is now trying to decide if those texts violated the state's racial justice act. a homicide case can be jeopardized by those officers. the antioch police chief said he himself is the target of a racist meme and he resigned as a result of the scandal. within the past our mayor of antioch released a statement, quote, today is a dark day in our city's history as people trusted to uphold the law allegely breached that trust and were arrested
