nelson reaches a point opposite pittsburgh landing and begins to cross at about 5:00, 5:30. he'll get roughly 12 companies on the field engaged against the confederate's last assault against what is grant's last line, and that's the sum total of buell's involvement on the first day. so there will be a constant convoy of shipping between pittsburgh landing and savannah throughout the night. you can imagine offloading personnel. buell has brought in about 14,000 troops have arrived at pittsburgh landing and been deployed on what is the left side of the union front. and that's basically what grant and buell will decide to do. buell control of the left. grant's troops will occupy the right although grant will use a sizable number of his force to reinforce bu ell throughout the day and support his engagements on the east side. grant is basically able to infuse into his army the same number of troops that he loses on the first day even if buell was still way back to columbia, tennessee, or up to nashville, grant would have been able to replace his first day losses with what troops

and that's the example of just what you see at pittsburgh landing. so the confederates have been backed up. the federals believe they're completely on the defensive, but they're concentrating. and the purpose of that concentration on the behalf of albert sydney johnston and pierre gustav beauregard as second command is to bring forcing together to strike back. and where they're going to strike back is ulysses s. grant's army encamped immediately to their north. because that's the number one threat on the runway, so to speak. its closest. it's the most immediate. at any given day they could march out against the railroads and sever them. so they have to neutralize grant. and that's what brings on the battle of shiloh. they believe they have to strike grant before buell arrives because they knew that buell was marching overland. their intelligence kept them informed of his daily progress. so in the first week of april of 1862, although the concentration isn't fully complete. johnson doesn't have all the elements of the western confederate army that he

officially, the battle went in as battle of pittsburgh landing.rgh landing. confederates referred to it as the battle of shiloh. that shiloh name, biblical in its connotation, meaning place of peace or house of peace, took dominance and predominance over the identity of the conflict through time. and so it's interesting to see a battle honor for a pittsburg landing on these flags. this was in the possession of lucius d. woodruff of the 21st missouri infantry. a unit that participated in the battle with prentiss's division and fought at hornet's nest. flags underwent renovation. you can see the dark fabric backed by the lighter fabric to fill out what's missing on the flag. same is true for the white stripes as well, where you can see that the flag was in tatters. these fabrics, of course, ravages of time, storage, light, moisture, you name it, it's amazing that things like this do survive even if they're stored away in an attic somewhere, usually they go through some major deterioration over time if they don't have proper treatment and care. peopl
