you see here, a landslide struck as it was on the track between pleasanton and fremont. we're told it took hours to free the people on board. you see the crews out there. firefighters as well. thankfully no one was hurt. we did send marianne favro to the scene. i know you were able to speak with people on the train. what a day it has been for them. what did they say happened? >> reporter: well, there were 220 passengers on board that train and a lot of them told me they were just cruising along on the train through the niles canyon area about 8:20 this morning, when the train stopped abruptly. that's when they learned a landslide came down and came up against some of the train cars. in fact, some of the passengers showed us that video with debris and mud pressing up against the train's windows. and on the other side, there was a river below that was rushing. so they could not be evacuated from the train. it was just too dangerous. they had to sit and wait. >> okay. so they had to sit and wait. we know, for hours. so i'm wondering with the people you spoke with, were they

. >> the interruption happened just off niles canyon road between the pleasanton and fremont stations. >> this side of niles cannon has been an area that has been impacted by the floods and storms within the last couple of weeks. zach: niles canyon road only recently opening following a previous slide. the events that halted the train happened around 8: 20, when the tearing -- the train encounter the mudslide and brought there commute to a stop. >> i usually take a nap in the morning because it is early. all i heard was a loud noise and felt a rumble. zach: union pacific owns the tracks of the train was on and sent a crew to inspect the safety. in the meantime, afternoon service to other trains was impacted while a rescue train was brought and passengers transferred to buses. >> i'm going home. i'm going to work from home. >> race says they have been working with the real commission to form alternate plans for passengers who use other trains. >> does unfortunate come up but the fortunate part of it is that we are not experiencing any. zach: still, that wasn't enough to change the mood
