the police department. but we did see some instances where police have fired tear gas at the crowd to disperse the crowd. they have also declared this an unlawful gathering. so they wind the people in the crowd to simply disperse at this point. at this point multiple officers are injured by projectiles. something we also saw an san jose earlier today, police in those cases used teargas firing back into the crowd. so these are pictures, again, of the demonstrations. thousands of people. it looked like a much bigger one that took place down south earlier today. with awesome fires, one close to the bus stop that seemed to be a garbage can at the time. and we also saw demonstrators that came in to help stop what was on fire at the time. again, as we look at these pictures you see people running down by jackson street as you turn on the seventh heading for the broadway area. this is earlier tonight when the demonstrations were going on 880. made their way down the jackson street exit up underneath the edd overpa

there have been policing -- some police over there, police vehicles going around the city with national guard generally speaking with backup of national guard. moved to areas people have been convening. crowd as you know, crowd i was with of a few thousand appears to have dispersed and little gatherings are broken up by police. did that effectively earlier by firing tear gas and tracers and rubber bullets into the crowd which also hit us earlier. has had the desired effect of enforcing the curfew in minneapolis. other thing we saw happen because of that, saw national guard escorting firefighters. we've not seen fires tonight we've seen last few nights. fires of the last few nights have not been able to be put out because firefighters not able to go in without the protection of the national guard. there are many many many many more national guard. all police leave and paid time off for police, emt and firefighters has been canceled in minneapolis. everybody is on the job and they have a handle on the fires. ambulance was escorted by national guard. fire trucks, several when we started to

before it got dark, there was the state police, a line of police all the way surrounding the perimeter. there were the sheriffs deputies behind them. and then when they fell back, the national guard rolled in with their military vehicles. they came in fairly large numbers. not larger than the number of protesters here. they fell back. they fell so far back that the protesters could not find them. they were walking where they were going and then ended up three miles or so out to the fifth precinct. now their ire is focused here. because as you know, the third precinct is damaged. they attacked it. >> it looks like a tourist attraction with people going in and out. i see people walking in and out, probably ogling, oh, this was a police station. the officers on top of that fifth precinct, can you tell what kind of weapons they have? is it serious stuff or is it rubber? do you know? >> i do. we've been seeing these same weapons on top of the third precinct for the last 48 hours. they are nonlethal weapons. they certainly have lethal weapons on them but what they are hold is gone nonlethal

when you think about a police station, a police department, that conjures images of a fortress, that is impenetrable, that is not the case now in minneapolis. there were a number of protesters that gathered outside this precinct. the precinct three is the name, just not far from where the death of george floyd occurred, which we know was the african-american man who, that dramatic video that we showed before, showed him on the ground, with the police officer, with his knee on his neck, he later died. that's obviously been the subject of a robust investigation by local officials as well as the fbi. but it is that incident that has now sparked such outrage here in this community. leading to a number of protesters gathering outside this police station, and what started as peaceful, then turned into very confrontational situation, where you had protesters outside who were throwing rocks at the police station. we did see a number of police officers on the roof, who were returning fire, not with a lethal weapon, but with tear gas, and we ourselves were gassed at one point, and had to move

and that means police accountability, police oversight. i served in civilian police officer oversight. we have recommendations around the country about ways to strengthen civilian oversight. transparency around disciplinary records of officers. we learned that the officer who had his knee on mr. floyd's neck caught what apparently causing his death, actually had 18 prior complaints against him. he had two actual disciplinary actions, but thif you start to e that number of complaints, there has to be some real questions about what's going on with the officer. and the other thing we have seen far too often is that even when a police officer is fired for misconduct, they show up on the police force in another city or town. these are the kinds of things that simply make people feel that the system doesn't work properly. and these are things that can be fixed if we're willing to face the facts that there are some officers who need to be punished. >> in the meantime after that briefing today by a local, state, and federal officials, there has no

we're just about half a mile from the local police precinct, the fifth police precinct. now, what happened days ago, the third precinct here was torched by violent protesters. police did not want to see a repeat of that. now, behind me also on the ground here, you can see where the police officers were staging. those cardboard boxes, the pieces where they were preparing some of the projectiles that would then be launched into the crowd, those dispersion chemical gas, tear gas that was dispersed and spread throughout the crowd, trying to push them back, trying to get them away from the police station. now, of course, we know that this effort here was able to save the police station. we didn't see damage there, but protesters then moved throughout different parts of the city and set other structures on fire. again, despite this call for calm, despite the call from the governor that we would see an overwhelming show of force, the protesters continue, at least some of them, to set these fires ablaze to cause destruction here in parts of minneapolis. >> josh, what's the gover

it's not just about policing although policing is a big part of it. don't get me wrong. there's a need for reform in policing which unfortunately to a large extent was shutdown with this current administration taking over. there were systemic issues that need to be addressed. that's going to take some time. that change won't happen overnight and people are frustrated and they are taking it out now. you're seeing it in cities across the country. so there is no one thing that has to change that could make a difference like overnight literally. but the there needs to be real tangible progress being made. use minneapolis as an example. i mean you got three other officers out there that do need to face some kind of charges, in my opinion. what happened there was totally inexcusable, and i really understand the charging of that one officer with third agree murder but i believe the other three ought to be charged as well. there needs to be something that happens that people realize and recognize, yeah at least it's a start. >> the reason i always like to have you on as a guest
