teams are here at the pomona fairgrounds for what is being called the olympic games of robotics. the defense department organized this first of its kind competition. the teams are developing computer software that will someday have these robots act and think like you and me. >> the challenge is figuring out what exactly our brains are doing when they're doing these things, you know, pushing on stuff and moving stuff around and picking things up without falling over. >> reporter: the eight tasks the robots are required to do include driving a car and turning off a valve. the defense department hopes someday soon robots will be used to go into dangerous areas such as a collapsed building looking for survivors. >> robots today are very very, very far from what humans can do and so what you'll see here is even the robots that look like they're able to do some of these tasks they're being remotely controlled by humans. they have very little capability by themselves so we're still at the very early stages of this robot revolution. >> reporter: next to the competition there's an inner a
