i want to go down the road where the post office is. it is the main road or was the main road of the modern city jerusalem and the road along which the modern century developed. in the middle of the 19th century, jerusalem stopped being a walled in city. i can give you a tour of the street and their work and biographies and how they each, in one way of another dealt with the tension of politics and aesthetics in their work. it is a small area but it will lead us across a lot of time and we will take a few detours. so if you walk in just a few hundred meters you will see the first building that i want to tell you about. this, until recently was known as the national bank, when it went up in 1939 it was the angled palestine bank and the tallest building in jerusalem at a soaring seven stories and seemed like just one of the most dignified public buildings in town. the way it sits in relation to the front and the hill behind and constructed with this incredible awareness of its own context and this is no surprise when you learn the man res
