at that point they realized, and they had a great respect for the post office. that was the highest level of law enforcement. the fbi was in its infancy. you have u.s. marshals and the secret service. officers were the g-men in every town, you avoided them but not a direct confrontation. scott: i wondered about that too, that is a great question. you would think family members would be threatened. victoria: they were threatened, absolutely. frank was living under threat a lot of the time, which is why the family members of the postal inspectors would live two hours away by train. it was very dangerous. they were under threat all the time. once you go and become a cop killer, that is a whole different thing. they had carte blanche in the italian neighborhoods because they were just going after the italians who were afraid to go to the police. scott: these defendants, if i remember correctly in the book, most if not all of them stayed out of trouble once they were released from prison, right? no? victoria: no. a couple of them. scott: i thought some of them got in

this is not like your normal post office. it is not where you go to buy stamps on or you drop off the mail yourself. this is a sorting facility. and packages that are sent from as far north as ft. pierce, florida to arrest far south as key west, a population of around 7 million people, that is where all the mail is sorted if it is a package. now, one challenges here has been because these packages were bulky, the stamps were not canceled. and of course the cancellation marks would show where they were initially dropped off. but the authorities are say be even though they would like to trace back to where the packages began their journey within the mail system, it doesn't necessarily lead to the suspect or suspects because somebody could simply have driven into this region, this zone, dropped it off and then driven right back out. but it is all part of the investigation. and they are really hopeful. think about how difficult this is. the fbi is talking to employees that work here every day, a sea of packages going past them. t

the post office is actually behind me and to the left behind this hot dog vending. we see dozens of police officers, first responders, fire department officials. we're on 52nd and 8th. the post office is between 8th and 9th avenue. what we know so far a bomb containment vehicle has made its way to the scene here. that is the same vehicle that moved the suspicious package from the cnn building a couple days ago to the rodman facility for the bomb squad. that's a protective concrete vehicle that will move the package and be sent to quantico. the suspicious package from our sources was addressed to james clapper. we also know from postal workers that were here that the package looked exactly like and resembled those packages we've seen throughout the week, the manila envelope, the six excessive postage stamps with the american flag on them and block lettering. it's why it was spotted. the post office workers were sent over to a hotel where they are there awaiting this area has been cleared. this particular post office in the middle of midtown new york is just seven bloc
