california like los angeles and san francisco hit decade highs. and indeed, in san diego, religion was the third most common san diego city now, which is just outside of powaygion was the third most frequent basis for hate crime in san diego city, but for california, we're looking at a fourth consecutive year of increases. we had just under 1,100 hate crimes last year. increase in anti-semitism, increase in cases involving houses of worship here in california. california, we also have the highest number of hate groups in the country. so it's a bit of a mixed bag. interestingly enough, also, san diego did not appear to take part in something we saw last year which was around election time, a significant spike. a lot of other cities like boston, philly, new york, and l.a., we saw big spike around election time, also in 2016. didn't see that in san diego last year. >> interesting. and unfortunately, so many people around the country have been impacted by hate crimes and has been an issue that's on the rise. julian, first of all, my condolences to you, your community. this impacts you as a member of the jewish community in a very deep way. you spent time resear

i want to go to cnn correspondent nick watt in poway, california. what are you learning about what happened there? >> reporter: well, we are learning about the victims, jake. i want to talk about lori kaye, the 60-year-old woman shot dead in the synagogue. she was at the service for remembrance prays for her own mother who died this past november, and her husband was also in the synagogue. he is a physician. he saw somebody had been shot. he ran to help that person, was administering cpr not realizing it was his own wife. when he did realize, we are told that he fainted. she leaves behind a 22-year-old daughter. rabbi goldstein was also injured. he told nbc news he heard a noise, turned and was face-to-face with the gunman and his fingers were blown off. another two injured was a young girl and her uncle. the young girl had come to this country from israel to try to live a more peaceful life. they moved here looking for a better life, and now her father is telling us his kids don't want to be here anymore. jake? >> it's just heartbreaking. nick watt
