priscilla, how many votes do they estimate are still out there? >> 21,000, brian. that is the magic number here today and it is also work to get the ballots counted. i want to step aside to give you a look at the operation they have going here. for the past 14 hours people have been in and out of the room working to count the ballots. they started the day with 74,000 ballots and made pretty significant gains but still have a long way to go. right now they are averaging about 2,000 to 3,000 per hour. but to be in the room, you can feel a sense of energy and urgency. you get into a rhythm.

. >>> let's go to georgia, to priscilla thompson. what is going on there? >> we're heading into the 16th hour of ballot counting in fulton county. i want to walk you through what this process actually looks like. the folks are having to get those envelopes, open them up, and open up another envelope in order to get to that ballot and pull it out, flatten it, so that it can be scanned. and once it's scanned, there will be a computer chip sent to a warehouse, that's where the vote is counted and tabulated. right now, they're getting through about 2,000 to 3,000 of these ballots per hour. we're told at this point, they're hoping to continue going until they have them all done. likely to be another couple of

, and priscilla, what's been interesting about the georgia turnout, while i hear hand wringing aboutan-american turnout in philadelphia, in detroit, in milwaukee and in miami-dade, you don't hear about it in georgia, and this is what has republicans very nervous. >> reporter: right, exactly, and this is what some of these groups are hoping to contend with here. we're with the new georgia project, they're out knocking on doors in black and brown communities looking to turn those voters out. and i want to read a little bit of the literature they're leaving. it says black voters are the most powerful voters in georgia. 55,000 more votes for stacy abrams would have made her the first black woman governor in america, and so what you hear there is there are folks who are still very upset about the way that race went. many people saying that voter suppression may have been at play in stacey abrams loss, and they want to make sure black voters turn out in high numbers here. they make up 30% of the electorate here in georgia, a huge slice, and we saw those voters break for president obama abo

. >> before we go i have a few minutes i want to check in in georgia with priscilla thompson is thereon, the senate seats don't matter to the majority if you believe donald trump won the election. so how did mike pence dance around that issue? >> it was a very interesting thing that we saw him doing here. so early on in his remarks he said he wanted every legal vote to be counted, every illegal vote not to be counted, and he said regardless of the outcome we will continue to fight to make america great again. we heard him later in his spe h speech. but one thing thing he made it clear here, a senate majority here, they run through the state of jazgeorgia. they need to help hold the line. this is the last line of defense to trekd everything that president trump has done. he encouraged them to tell their neighbor and to tell other people and to come out on the first day of early voting. to be the first in line to cast their ballots for these candidates, chuck? >> priscilla, if you believe the senate majority runs through georgia you don't think that donald trump won the election. a tigh

>> reporter: priscilla, good morning.in texas that we haven't seen for several election cycles. that's because for the first time in my lifetime texas is being labeled as as to-up state with polls putting biden and trump neck and neck. the signs out loud and proud, everyone trying to get the last bit of campaigning in. the sheer number of texans that already cast their vote in early vote surpass the entire amount of people that casted a vote back in 2016. if you ask folks what will be the difference maker in this election, they point to 1.8 million new registered voters since 2016. democratic operatives will tell you the majority of those people will vote for joe biden. republicans will say it all depends on how many people actually turn out to the polls. if we're right under 10 million right now, this number could eclipse 12 million. we're talking about truly unprecedented territory for texas. my colleague gadi schwartz is following the latest in arizona we'll send it to him. gadi. >> reporter: morgan, we're seeing very

priscilla, is the recount having any impact on the senate races?t will not have any impact on those senate races. the secretary of state here has said that this recount, recanvass audit, this sort of all in one will happen looking at the presidential votes because of the national significance of that race. and we know there's going to be a statewide call here with county officials held later on this morning to go over the training and procedures necessary in order for counties to begin to get that hand recount under way. but in the meantime, while the focus in the state of really on that presidential recount, those sit-in candidates are back on the campaign trail this week. jon ossoff is on day three of a four-day statewide tour across the state. reverend warnock, the other democratic candidate in one of the senate races here will also be stumping today. and they are putting forth a message focusing on access to health care and hammering republicans on their response to the coronavirus. at the same time, kelly loeffler has been in the state this we

priscilla, what are you seeing so far today? >> reporter: andrea, no long lines here but certainly a lot of enthusiasm on the ground. i just spoke to a man, 36 years old, and this is his first time voting in an election. he tells me that he made the decision very last-minute. he wasn't sure up until very recently, which is why he showed up to vote today. take a listen to what he said. >> every voice, every vote counts. i'm a plaqblack man, it's a lot going on with our community. it's a lot going on in the world. that push, to be personal, i don't feel like trump has been -- has been right, basically. >> reporter: and that's something that i've heard from a couple of black voters that i've spoken to here in gwinnett county. it's interesting because ten years ago, this county did not look the way that it does now. it was a primarily white county, largely republican. now these demographics are changing and it could help dems pick it up this time around. >> priscilla thompson, thanks for being with us on election day. joining me now

joining me, priscilla thompson in atlanta with the latest out of georgia. priscilla, now that we've had a day here, have senators loeffler and perdue come up with any sort of specific reason or allegation at what the secretary -- that the secretary of state somehow ran this election in such a way that it, you know, he should resign over it? what is the reasoning for that? what i'm searching for is a rationale to call for this resignation, other than joe biden won the state. >> right. i think that's a key question that everyone here is asking. they sent out this release yesterday making the sort of broad claims around mismanagement of the election and a lack of transparency, but they didn't cite any specific evidence or examples. and beyond these statements we have not seen any of the folks involved in this coming out on camera to make statements or anything like that where we can get more information about these claims. but as you mention, the secretary of state here has pushed back very strongly against that messaging and had pretty strong words for those

>> all right, priscilla.urious to get your thoughts when it comes to the "atlanta journal constitution" reporting, what are you hearing from your sources? i'm inclined to think it's true. i don't have reason to doubt it, but the behavior of the republicans now when it comes to acknowledging that joe biden is the winner of this election, there's reporting that suggests that president is leaning on republicans to not acknowledge the results. so, why wouldn't he be able to do this? what are you hearing from your sources? >> yeah, i thnk thatin think th. the big issue, look, one of them does it, the other has to do it. they can't divide on this. they're going to be on the ballot on the same day in january, kelly loeffler and perdue. he's going to need republicans to turn out. there's going to be a lot. i mean, unimaginable amounts of money in this race. i was just standing outside the senate republican conference lunch here in the capitol and that's what republicans were talking about. this is the senate majority

. >> priscilla, what's the counting plan there in atlanta? >> yeah, chris, well, a number of folks have already gone home. we spoke with the folks out in gwinnett county, another one of those counties. steve kornacki mentioned clayton county. and those folks have gone home for the day. they finished this process of adjudicating ballots, so earlier this week when they were scanning ballots they were having an issue with getting some of those granted by the scanner, and they had to pull those out and have a committee come in and actually review those and determine the voters intent, and we now know that process is done. they had initially said it could have taken up until sunday to get that ballot count in, but they were able to finish it today and around 13 hours, they are not going to be reporting those numbers tonight. but we are expecting them to -- >> i think we may have lost the audio for priscilla thompson there in atlanta. as you heard from priscilla, we've got a lot of counting that happened in atlanta, report tomorrow morning. we're n

. >> joining me now from atlanta is nbc's priscilla thompson. priscilla, you are in the hot spot. this week has gone, we were looking at philadelphia as the place where it's all happening. now it's atlanta where it's all happening because it's so close, it's so much to do with what stacey abrams has done. and we have two unsettled senate seats there, which could throw control of the senate to the democrats. what is the situation as you see it? >> reporter: yeah, well democrats are certainly hoping that that will be the case, and we see that already with ad spending getting under way here. both jon ossoff and reverend raphael warnock have gone up again on the airwaves with ads here ahead of that senate runoff. and in addition, stacey abrams, as you mentioned who has done so much here to mobilize voters, has implored her supporters to donate to those campaigns. she released a video on twitter a few weeks ago and raised more than $3.6 million for those campaigns in just 48 hours. and we're seeing similar efforts here happening on the republican side of this effort as well. so it is g

priscilla? >> reporter: brian, you can tell a lot about a campaign based on where the candidate is spending their time. and the fact that donald trump is about to touch down in georgia this close to an election is certainly sending a message. donald trump has campaigned in this state three times since late september, and to put this into context, in 2016 after he became the republican nominee, donald trump did not campaign in this state a single time, and he still won it by five points. and so that is what we're looking at on the ground here in georgia. a string of recent polls out of this state show a very tight race with joe biden either tied with the president or beating him. although, within the margin of error. this is a state that has not voted for a democrat for president since the early '90s. and i talked to some of the trump supporters who are here today who waited in line for hours in the cold to hear the president speak tonight. and i asked them what do you make of those poll numbers?

now to you priscilla. what is the vibe in the trump event?> reporter: well, a lot of enthusiasm here on the ground for president donald trump. ali talked about the safety precautions in place. here there are not a lot of folks wearing masks. when i asked what they wanted to hear about. many said they don't want to hear about covid and the coronavirus. they want the president to focus on jobs and the economy and what they call conservative values. this is really important because he is campaigning in northwest georgia, a very conservative part of the state that he won with more than 70% of the vote. but overall he only carried the state by five points. as we look at the recent polling out of georgia showing a very tight race with joe biden tied with donald trump or leading him. the president has work to do if he wants to win in what historically has been a red state. we know democrats are making a play. barak obama will be here. kamala harris was here today. it is shaping up to be a very competitive race. >> now to the swing state of michigan.

president trump is set to hold al rally in about an hour, priscilla, good to see you. >> reporter: oneng they do not to hear is the talk about coronavirus. half a dozen of supporters in line did not want to hear about coronavirus. they like to hear him focusing on american values today like freedom and some very concrete issues, jobs and the economy and another point as one person put it, conservative values. we are at northwest georgia. this is a state that donald trump won with more than 70% of the vote. i spoke to a mother and daughter duo, they don't agree the way president trump carried himself but they would like to talk about abortion and freedom of religion. those are the issues that's important to them. >> priscilla, when we talked about latino states, we talked about arizona and florida and people forget about a state like georgia where there is now a sizable latino population. how are changing demographics more broadly in the state of georgia affecting the president's chances of winning the state? >> reporter: well, that's a key question here alicia. if you look a little clo

priscilla thompson is in atlanta. you are not done covering the campaigns.ould be a huge shift in a state that's been reliably red for almost two decades. >> georgia has not had a democratic senator since 2005. this is a big deal. it's why we're seeing the money and resources flooding into the state. you mentioned stacey abramabram. she raised the $6 million. i was told that money is going to be divided among the candidates. so the organizations fair fight working to register voters and mobilize voters ahead of the runoff election. i have to tell you, in speaking to voters before election day, they were telling me they were already tired of the campaigning and the ads. little did they know they would be getting nine more weeks. i checked in with folks about that this morning. take a listen to what they said. listen in. >> you all aren't tired todd ads yet? >> bring them on. i think right now we need to be inundated with here's what's going to happen if we don't get the senate. >> reporter: and hallie, they're likely to get that wish of inundation when we loo

nbc's priscilla thompson following the runoffs. how are both sides playing in this overtime? >> shep, a little over a week after election day and campaigning is back in full swing here on one hand you have senators loeffler and purdue, the republicans presenting a unified message here we saw them earlier today releasing a joint video in honor of veterans day and hosting that joint rally billed as a save our majority rally today, and that is really the messaging that we're hearing here since republicans need to save this majority and this is the way to do that and that is why vice president mike pence will be here later this month campaigning on behalf of both of those candidates meanwhile, on the democratic side, those candidates are campaigning much more independently, so john osoff is wrapping up a drive-in event in columbus, georgia. he's on day two of a statewide four-day campaign swing, focused on coronavirus and access to health care and how the president has managed this virus. rafael warnoff has been making the rounds on television doing interviews to get his message

. >> let me bring in priscilla thompson from atlanta.here and where does this go? do we expect to hear from other officials or the secretary of state? what's your understanding? >> reporter: well, no word yet from the secretary of state coming out to make a statement on camera or any of the lawmakers involved in this situation for that matter. but what we have seen over the past 24 hours is a flurry of statements from everyone involved. this began with loeffler and perdue saying the way elections have been handled in this state is a, quote, embarrassment. meanwhile the trump campaign this morning in that effort led by representative doug collins requesting that the recount here happen by hand. that means folks would be required to count nearly 5 million ballots by hand. they say they will be petitioning the court to see about getting that done. and then you heard representative collins there talking about sort of down playing there's any infighting going on among republicans and they are just asking the secretary of state to do his job.

nbc's priscilla thompson is live in atlanta and vaughn hillyard is here from phoenix.ned to see you're not wearing your turquoise bolo tie. it seems like you might be nearing your last days covering the campaign in arizona. what are we waiting for tonight and what is the expectation? >> reporter: well that is what we thought on sunday, katie, whether we talked. that we were near the end. but here we are. we're still here. and i think we should raise the stakes that if we finish before georgia does, i think priscilla is hosting thanksgiving later this month if i may, because we are getting close. and we should know here in arizona there is just about 24,000 ballots left out standing to be counted and we are expected to get another major drop in just about 12 minutes from now. out of the tucson area, pima county, right now joe biden has a lead of about 11,500 votes and it is hard to make up that margin with just 24,000 votes left to go. and the lawsuit was heard today brought by the trump campaign which would impact 180 ballots here so i think tonight is very telling, no

priscilla, thank you. >>> we still don't know the final results of this race. the trump campaign is trying to stop the votes in several states. you heard it a few minutes ago. they want to continue the votes in arizona, stop the votes in other states. that doesn't seem to make very much sense. i'm hoping my next guest can help me. last night the president's team filed a lawsuit in georgia on top of the suits already filed in michigan and pennsylvania for also calling for a recount in wisconsin. nbc is calling biden the apparent winner in that state meaning it is close enough that a recount could make a difference. i want to bring in nate. an expert on election law and a professor at stanford law school. that means he knows a lot of nerdy stuff that we don't. nate, what do you make of the president's lawsuits? >> well, they are sort of an attempt to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, but that's not uncommon in election litigation. and i think that right now we don't know what will be the hanging chad of the 2020 election. you may remember in 2000

you know, i just heard priscilla and saw her in atlanta. i just came from times square where there was similar jubilation. i don't know if you can hear it faintly in the background, and i am central park where there is another street party going, and i am hearing from friends people in harlem and in union square are celebrating. new york is full of joy and jubilation. this is donald trump's home city. there is just an air of relief of joy -- it feels like we can move on and sleep tonight, like we can actually breathe again. i have to tell you, for blacks folks this morning, you know, the guy that drove me into my covid set, which is where i was when i heard joe biden had crossed 270, i was getting my nose swabbed at the time this happened so i missed it completely. >> joy, let me get this down second by second for the audience. you are going through your covid test. i had one thursday, and i get one pretty much every week now, and so the thing is -- was the thing in your nose when you got the news? was it going from one nostril to the other

priscilla in atlanta. and steve kornacki is handcuffed to the big board. we'll get to him in a minute. i want to start with morra. right now i believe in the building behind you is where some of the vote count is restarting just outside and around pittsburgh here. >> that's right y. we were brought into the warehouse in al gainmy county. a democratic stronghold. they're looking to see positive returns in terms of what biden's campaign is looking for. these workers were supposed to be counting ballots, but we thought overnight 20/7 in shifts. it turns out the same group of 20 0 people were scanning ballots all day yesterday. they decided to take a break overnight and are just starting to arrive back at the warehouse today. you can take a look behind. you can see a sliver of the election materials that have come back from the election offices. a rough estimate, over 1,000 boxes still in there that are going to go in and be scanned and processed today. taking a look at a broader picture of pennsylvania, we've seen about 2.5 million ballots returned. mail-in b

let's go right out to priscilla in georgia. >> reporter: ari, we now know more than 200,000 absenteeallots here in the state of georgia are being counted right now as we speak. the secretary of state earlier today saying that we will have those results by the end of the day today, and the lion's share of those ballots are in fulton county followed by dekalb county. those are two areas in the metro atlanta area considered democratic strongholds so expect it to help tilt the race for joe biden, but i should also point out that there are absentee ballots also being counted in some smaller rural counties that could potentially give donald trump a bump, and to put that into context, right now joe biden is trailing donald trump by around 90,000 votes. this is shaping up to be an incredibly tight race, which could lend itself to legal challenges as tight races sometimes do. and so one of the things that we're keeping an eye on here is that u.s. postal service case that is making its way through federal ports. one of the things about georgia is that those absentee ballots had to be returned

want to go to priscilla tampson live in atlanta. we've gotten updates from state election officials there. what's the latest there, how much vote is out and what happens next? >> chris, with 99% of the vote count already in all eyes tonight are turning to those military absentee ballots and those provisional ballots cast on election day. today was the last day for folks to get those military absentee ballots or for the counties to receive those ballots postmarked by election day. and counties are also working through around 14,000 provisional ballots. those are folks that voted on election day, and maybe didn't have a ballot id or had some sort of issue that they had to remedy before that vote could be counted. we just learned a little while ago that fulton county, the largest county in the state, is expected to release vote counts for around 3,800 provisional ballots. we're going to be watching that very closely. but beyond that, we're -- state officials are turning their attention to the possibility of a recount. we have heard the
