a brand new correctional officer here at san quentin. i was working graveyard in a section called donner. >> this officer is a member of the investigative services unit, an elite team of c.o.s who track gang activity and other threats to the institution. >> one night my partner and i were working graveyard. i was sitting with my back to a file cabinet just like this. there was a row of padlocks on the top handle. my partner and i were talking, all of a sudden, the locks started rattling back and forth together, clacking. he looked at it. i looked at it. see, i'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it. we both ran out of the office. we had no explanation as to what that was. we asked some other officers and they said that, you know, the unit is probably haunted. so never can tell. there was no explanation for it. there was no earthquake. the inmates weren't complaining in the unit about the ground moving. there were no wild animals in there. i didn't bump it. he didn't bump it. so no telling. >> there's been a history of other strange

i talked to quentin tarantino about who he is physically. charlie: like what he wears, how he walks? samuel: what his hair looks like. all those things that i like to make up for a character. i have that discussion with him so that when i am visualizing the character and i read the script for the 25th time i have that character. i can see him on screen in the film. as i see him and read the words, i realize if this person is seeing it he would say it this way. i make a note. i don't just show up on his set and say something he hadn't written. i will go to him inside i think i know what you mean here but you ought to say it this way. he will say read what i wrote, say the way you want to say it, ok, i like it. charlie: if he likes it, he will keep it. samuel: or he will say say it the way i wrote it. charlie: and you accept that. you don't argue. samuel: yeah. charlie: the way this character is addressed, was that the cost in the you imagine? samuel: we went through several iterations of the cost and because he actually lives on that mountain

the rest of san quentin is relatively low security.s struck then with all the men walking around. it almost had the feel of a college campus. grass, trees, birds, so on. death row is very different. it's dark. it's noisy, all steel and concre concrete. there's nothing soft or warm or fuzzy about it at all. men don't get to walk around by themselves at all. they're chained or have some restraint when they move from one place to another. there's very little freedom. if they follow the rules, they get to play basketball, as you saw in the one clip. they also get some time outside. but oftentimes it's just in a cage, but a 12 by 16 cage. so they can get some fresh air, do some pull-ups, that kind of thing. >> a rather grim environment to spend decades in. one inmate in the piece said he's been there 35 years. professor little, this comes at an interesting juncture in time in california. we have not one but two conflicting ballot initiatives in circulation. can you take us through the two of them? >> the two initiatives are founded on the s

and then i said, "why don't you come to this pub," to quentin. this pub i used to go to, over on sunset. yeah, sure, let's do that. so we get there, have a few beers. and then he's starting to write out the scenes on a beer mat. i said, "don't worry about it. i've got the script at my place." i was drunk by this point.
