rachel scott is in florida near where trump spent his night. ies. but this time as the first former president to ever face federal criminal charges. trump left his new jersey golf club late yesterday, traveling here to south florida for today's court appearance. he's facing 37 felony counts accused of hanging on and mishandling classified documents containing the nation's most sensitive secrets from our nation's nuclear capabilities to possible plans of retaliation against a foreign attack. prosecutors have photos showing trump stored some of those classified documents at his mar-a-lago resort, in a ballroom, storage room, even a bathroom. prosecutors charge trump knew that he was not authorized to hold onto those classified documents but did so anyway. in just a few hours, trump is expected to appear in court but without his full legal defense team. two of his attorneys resigned hours before the indictment was unsealed. trump traveled here early, in part to meet with new potential attorneys. we're told those meetings continue today. george? >>

and i want to bring in abc's senior congressional correspondent rachel scott with some of the politicse. rachel, no doubt there will be large reactions to this from washington on both sides of the aisle. what are you watching for? well, look, diane, make no mistake about it, house republicans have made this a number one priority since the first initial day of the new congress. they have centered their entire push around investigating not only president biden, but also his family, specifically hunter biden. they have held hearings on this around his business dealings. and so they will likely not be satisfied, abide by this deal and we will likely only see the outrage start to grow as this starts to ripple throughout capitol hill, lawmakers are expected to come back here to capitol hill later this afternoon. and so while the federal investigation appears to be wrapping up here, you can only expect that the outcry from house republicans is to only increase as they try to demand more answers to see how this all played out behind the scenes. and of course, all of this is taking place agains

chief congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off.a marathon night on capitol hill, negotiation and a bitter standoff that put millions of jobs at risk, congress has come together on a debt limit bill to avoid catastrophic default. this would claw back billions in unspent covid funds and irs funding. it would impose stricter work requirements for some older americans on food assistance. and will also end president biden's student loan repayment pause in august. it is expected to reduce the deficit by $1.5 trillion and suspend the debt limit for the next two years pushing off the next fight over this until after the next presidential election. not everybody was happy. republicans wanted deeper spending cuts, more money for the military. democrats were not happy about some of the new work requirements. but in the end it did pass with strong bipartisan support. in a statement, the president acknowledged not every side got what they wanted but still calling it a major win for the country. he's expected to sign this bill later today and ad

rachel scott is there in manchester. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning.even years ago chris christie endorsed donald trump for president. this morning he is now preparing to run against him. just a few hours christie will make it official, announcing his campaign in new hampshire. it will be his second run for the white house. he backed out of the race in 2016, served as a senior adviser to his campaign and later an abc news contributor. since then he has been one of trump's toughest critics making the case against the former president. he's not the only one expected to jump into the race this week. in fact, trump's own former vice president, mike pence, filing the paperwork to declare his 2024 campaign with a formal announcement expected in iowa tomorrow. by the end of this week, there will be 12 republican candidates in this race. one person who is not running, new hampshire governor, chris sanunu. he's saying such a crowded field could only make trump stronger, telling candidates who do not stand a chance to have the discipline to get out of the race n

i want to bring in rachel scott, our chief congressional correspondent. leading our coverage in the race for 2024. rachel, what have you learned? >> david, this is notable. the republican field is diverse. you have several candidates that have made their stories of adversity, diversity and own personal struggles a center piece of their campaign while also making it clear they opposed affirmative action. we are getting reaction. nikki haley, who introduced herself during the campaign as the daughter of immigrants, says picking winners and losers based on race is fundamentally wrong. she goes on to say in a statement this decision will help every student no matter their background have a better opportunity to achieve the american dream. probably the most vocal candidate on the issue of indian dissent has called for an end to affirmative action full stop. in a statement he says, affirmative action is a badly failed experiment. time to put a nail in the coffin. tim scott who, on the campaign trail, talked about rising from poverty, has said in the past america

i want to bring in rachel scott at the white house tonight. you have been following every twist and turn of this fight. the president tonight clearly touting his role here but speaker mccarthy is also trying to claim victory, even though the bill in the house received more support from democrats and republicans. rachel: exactly. even as president biden praised democrats and republicans, he also acknowledged the reality that bipartisanship is hard. in fact, more democrats supported this debt limit deal than republicans, even though this bill was negotiated by speaker mccarthy and even though republicans have a razor thin majority in the house.in , 107 republican members voted against the deal in congress. neither side got everything they wanted. the president did not even want to negotiate around it debt limit deal at all, but, tonight, president biden and speaker mccarthy prays this -- praised this as a victory for the country and not a specific party because it could have been catastrophic. mary: this bill means we will not see another fight
