randall: frankly, i am a little bit upset with the epa. it has taken them 18 months to try to correct the mistake they made in the first place. after 18 months, they really did not get anything done. kind of normal for them, but sad for a lot of us in the industry. rob, you look at energy policy. is there a link to the drop in oil prices? everything we talk about when it comes to energy, fuel, gas seems to be tied in some way to oil prices at the end of last year. rob: there is a link between food and fuel prices. really, you are pitting big oil versus big agriculture, and the ethanol industry with this very topic. i would interpret that what you saw today from epa gave a little bit to the oil industry, gave a little bit to the ethanol industry. nobody got everything they wanted. everybody got a little bit of what they wanted. in some way, the epa hit the policy right up the middle of the road. the big question for me, what does it mean for the farmers? allen, wait in on this. i will say 40% of the corn we produce in the u.s. goes to ethan

i'm randall pinkston. parts of california's coast line are closed today after a big oil spill.rews are combing the shoreline west of santa barbara. upwards of 105,000 gallons leaked when a pipeline ruptures on shore. jake ward joining us live. what is the latest on the cleanup effort there? >> reporter: randall here on the third day after the spill there is a sort of smell of petroleum product in the air. to look across the scene is quite tragic. there is oil speckling basically every rock and you can see the cleanup boats out on the horizon trying to contain which is now a spill that is spreading from beyond 12 square miles here. it is really just a tragic scene. there are 300 or more contract workers behind me wearing special suits, using special equipment to try to clean this beach by hand. it's really painstaking work and local officials are trying to warn away volunteers not just for the wildlife that can be hurt by well-meaning people but can be hurt by the oil. this is the migratory season for the iconic marine mammals that swim up and down this coast. all are moving to

i'm randall pinkston. the u.s. is asking saudi arabia to stop its air strikes in yemen. overnight, more than 30 air strikes hit two northern provinces right near the border with saudi arabia. the saudi coalition says the strikes are in response to houthis firing mortars and rockets at a saudi town. in washington there was a pledge of $68 million for humanitarian support for aid agencies in the region. >> reporter: the saudis are not against the idea of some kind of lull in the fighting in some areas, but when we look at the situation now and the latest developments, as the houthis have been able to strike inside saudi arabia and inflict damage in civilian areas for the first time it is unlikely that the saudis will accept to stop the air strikes across yemen. they may accept to do that in some parts. they have been talking recently about safe zones inside yemen where the humanitarian relief can be shipped there, but it is a problem because they have to put troops on the ground to protect those distribution points. they haven't yet clarified how they have going to do that

i'm randall pinkston. new report is out on the economy and so far the nation is off to a week start. the commerce department says the gross domestic product shrank in the first three months of the year. is this a surprise? >> it's not because this is the second revision, the second reading that we're getting on first quarter gdp, and with some of the data we have seen a lot of economists were expecting that the economy contracted in the first quarter. the gdp shrank .7%. the big drag exports those fell 7.6%. some temporary factors were behind that including bad water, and strikes disrupting activity at u.s. ports. but a strong dollar also dragged on exports because it makes american goods more expensive to buy abroad. meanwhile u.s. imports increased 5.6%. consumer spending rose 1.8%, but it marked a sharp slowdown from the end of last year and that matters a lot, because consumer spending accounts for roughly two thirds of u.s. economic growth. now that is the awful first quarter is behind us the chief ec
