first, though, our randi kaye in moose, wyoming, with the new information. randi? >> reporter: john, we are just getting some confirmation about an incident involving gabby petito and brian laundrie at a restaurant in downtown jackson, wyoming, called mary piglets. we spoke with the manager there just this evening. and she told us, quote, we saw an incident and we told authorities. she said it happened on august 27th. she said something jogged her memory just today and she called the fbi. she said there is no surveillance video of this incident but we also spoke with a woman who was there with her boyfriend. that woman's name is nina angelo. she was there with her boyfriend matt england. she says they were there around lunchtime. around 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. they were sitting next to gabby petito and brian laundrie. she said she didn't see a physical altercation or violence, but when the couple got up to leave, she said there was quite a commotion and that gabby left the restaurant in tears. she was crying as she walked out and she said that brian laundrie was very ang

our randi kaye is part of this team coverage.in just a few moments. randi kaye, i understand you're on the phone with us in wyoming. what can you tell us about what appears to be a significant development in the search for gabby petito? >> yeah, it certainly does, jim. we are actually in salt lake. we're actually right outside the fairfield inn where she was seen reportedly checking out in salt lake city on august 24th. so we're making our way towards teton and the grand teton. we know that a body was found in teton county. no gender yet, no identification, as you mentioned the 6:00 eastern time presser coming up with the fbi. so we will learn more. over the weekend here the fbi in denver was announcing that they were searching this camping area, the national park service was involved, the u.s. forest service, the teton county sheriff, the jackson, wyoming, police. they were all involved in conducting these ground searches at an area called the spread creek dispersed camping area. we don't know if that's where this body was found

cnn's randi kaye is outside the laundrie family home.he whereabouts of this phone? >> jake, we know that brian laundrie returned home to his family home september 1st from wyoming in gabby petito van without gabby petito. he was reported missing september 17th. just a few days before that, the 14th, is when his family says they saw him last. on that same day, apparently the attorney for the family confirming to cnn that brian laundrie did purchase a new phone at the at&t store, one of the at&t stores here in town in north port, florida, not far from the family home, on the 14th. the family attorney is also telling cnn that that is the same phone that brian laundrie left at home because we understand that he left his wallet and home at phone when he disappeared. that that is the same phone he left behind and the same phone that the fbi now has in its hands. so the question is, why on that day did he go to an at&t store and buy a new phone and then leave it behind, jake? >> you are also learning more about a camping trip the laundries took

let's bring in cnn's randi kaye live outside the laundrie family home in florida. today. what were they looking for? >> reporter: the fbi has been here a few times now already but they did return this afternoon. we reached out to the lawyer for the laundrie family and he told cnn that the fbi agents had come here to collect some personal items of brian laundrie's to help in the search for him. we are told that they collected those personal items to assist the k-9s please the the lawyer for the family said there is nothing more to it. what we saw were those agents arriving here with a large, brown paper bag. they went inside. they left without the paper bag. perhaps they were returning some items also. one of the agents briefly went into the camper that is parked here in the driveway and then left that camper but just so you know that would be the same camper, you mentioned the camping trip, september 6th through 8th that would be the camper they took. we know brian laundrie was likely in that camper recently and certainly in the house until he disappeared. >> what

cnn's randi kaye follows the route they may have taken on their way to a remote camping area in wyoming>> reporter: so, this may have been how gabby petito and her fiancee brian laundrie drove their van to enter the spread creek dispersed camping area. we are 28 miles outside of jackson, wyoming. we just turned off highway 191 ask we're driving now on forest road 30290. if you take a look you can see the road is a gravel road and it stretches for miles into the camp site. remember, video blogger jen bethune and her husband captured a picture of this van they believe was gabby petito's inside the spread creek dispersed camping area. they posted it on youtube and gave it to the fbi. bethunes told us they spotted the van august 27 around 6:30 p.m., but the van was dark and they didn't see anyone near it. the video bloggers sent us the coordinates where they say they saw that van. we're trying to find that location right now. they said it was about 2 1/2 miles in or so, and the van was right on the road. this dispersed camping area is an undeveloped camping area that offers few services. it

our randi kaye joins us now with the latest on that. ou know about this visit the laundrie family apparently made to a campground after brian laundrie returned home from wyoming? >> reporter: yeah, this is really interesting information, john. we know that brian laundrie returned from wyoming in gabby petito's van by himself here to the laundrie home on september 1st but now we are getting some new information about this camping trip. cnn has confirmed with the laundrie family attorney that the family went camping to the ft. de soto park which is about an hour or so north of the laundrie home, where we are, on september 6th and 7th. that's what the family attorney says. he says they all went camping together, and that they all left the campground together. what we don't know is if they all came home here together. so that is still a question. but the pinellas county park's check-in report, which was obtained by cnn, says that there is a record of mrs. laundrie, brian's mother, registering for a waterfront site to go camping september 6th

randi kaye is tracking these developments from north port, florida. randi?y targeted search. the fbi is now fully in charge of that search in the carlton reserve, not far from where we are right now, looking for brian laundrie. they hope that some of the higher waters do down so they can get into those areas they haven't been able to access before based on intelligence, of course. also, media outlets are reporting the last couple of days, investigators have come here to the laundrie home to collect dna-matching items. we don't know what they took. po possibly a toothbrush or comb, something to match to brian laundrie's dna, if they find him dead or alive in the reserve. they could possibly match it to the crime scene where petito's remains were found. perhaps the killer dropped a gum wrapper or something. we have information about the police stop an august 12th in moab, utah. somebody called 911 to say that they saw a man slapping a woman. grand county sheriffs dispatched moab mipolice to stop them. in the call, you'll hear them say a male slapped a female.

this new bit of reporting from randi kaye who has been out in wyoming, this restaurant, where a coupleaw, you know, a heated exchange between brian laundrie. gabby petito physically upset. may have been the last time anyone saw her alive. how does that fit into the puzzle for investigators? >> john, these reports are incredibly helpful to investigators primarily because they put the victim and the potential subject in a definitive place at a specific time. so that helps them build this timeline to kind of bridge back to that moment of when gabby was killed. as for the kind of personal remembrances of people who may have seen their interaction, that becomes less helpful. we all know that eyewitness testimony is typically -- can be very inaccurate. people's remembrances of things change over time. being able to pin them down a lot a particular day in time is very helpful. >> i want to talk about the search for brian laundrie. they keep going back to the nature preserve. now they have divers searching under water. do they have to have some sign of shred of evidence to keep on doing this,

our randi kaye joins us now from there. so what more do we know about this audio from the sheriff's office? explain the significance of it. >> reporter: well, anderson, this all goes back to that august 12th 9-1-1 call when someone called saying they had seen a man slapping a woman this is key because this is the dispatch tape to the moab police officers telling them that a male was seen slapping a female. that's what they said on that audio. so this was key because then the moab police were dispatched to find the couple. they found gabby petito and her fiance. they turned on their body camera and on that body cam, you see gabby petito visibly upset. she is crying. brian laundrie is showing them scratches on his hands. she says they did have a fight but she does tell the officers that he did not punch her. so they told them to separate for the night which they did but now we have learned that there is this investigation by the city of moab into the handling of this call because we know, also, that gabby petito was dead with

our randi kaye has the new information. s us from the laundrie family home in north port, florida. so what's the latest, randi? >> anderson, we have been working actually a couple scenes tonight. bouncing back and forth between the two. first, here at the laundrie home just about an hour and a half ago, there were reports of shots fired. ten police cars came racing down this street. two officers went inside. they had gotten a call about shots fired from an unknown number. they came here, checked it out. no evidence of shots fired so all was well. earlier in the day, we were at the carlton reserve where they had been searching for days now for brian laundrie. the nothing port police say they are just as committed now. their drive is just as strong to find him as on day one. they have been searching the swamps, the woods, the marsh, very deep water in that area as well and they have all kinds of tools they are really using. they are using swamp buggies, air boats, atvs, drones, they have officers on foot, as well. they will co

randi kaye is joining us with the charges that were just announced. >> reporter: good morning, john. details we are getting from the polk county sheriff. he said saturday night a suspect was arriving at this home, a woman called 911 about a suspicious vehicle, apparently the man said that god sent me here to speak with one of your daughters. that man is brian riley according to the sheriff. the deputies responded, he was gone by that time, nine hours later though he showed up at the same house and so did the deputies. they engaged this gunfire and hhe eventually came out. they went inside and found and 11-year-old girl shot multiple times and thalso a 40-year-old d 33-year-old dead and the three month old infant also dead. a grandmother also found dead in another house on the property. we know a little bit more, he served four years with the marines, he was honorably discharged and also served in iraq and afghanistan and he was a designated sharpshooter. investigators spoke with his girlfriend and this is what she told them. >> she said he had ptsd, office seen him depressed, and he
