this is a picture of ravens bruck. it's a women's camp. the bravest women, political prisoners, people who opposed nazis from all over occupied europe, women were sent to ravensbruck. toquette was 58 years old when she arrived at ravensbruck and she and several other americans who were imprisoned with her as well as other french women clubbed together and became a very tight-knit group and somehow she managed to survive the winter of 1944/'45. these women here are shown wearing the camp uniform. this is quite unusual for the group that toquette belonged to. most of the women in her group were forced to construct a airfield in december and january wearing summer dresses. many of them died from hypothermia, disease, typhus and by the spring of 1945 toquette herself was admitted into the infirmary at ravensbruck seriously ill. she had perhaps a couple of weeks to live. this is toquette, 59 years old. look at her face. from her chin to her breasts, thousands of scars from lice which she had for the rest of her life. 59 years old. 10 or 20 year
