i read her in high school and was greatly affected by reading about the woman warrior. before her there were few. there were some but didn't make that economic splash. they were never read in a large way. maxine was the first one we read her in school we knew of her. she was not out there like anny tan was when she wrote the joy luck club. so much of it is timing. it meant all the history and the voices before then had been silent. my generation of writers came in and we heard stories of women and men and the family of a different generation. a lot of us had been writing about that because they were silenced for so long. i am involved with the book prize. it's a pacific rim book prize in which books come from asia and all over the pacific rim. in the last 11 years it's been a prize we read so many books that have come from voices of new writers. i'm always amazed and they are writing different storers i wrote when i started. all the people have come through now. if you look at the list of indian and japanese authors and chinese authors it's now we are very much diverse.

with women of the silk i researched for 6 amongs and read and read and read. in one book i found 2 lines about the woman silk workers and knew immediately that's hai wanted to write about. it came to me like a dream that every writer prays for that you just knew you wanted to write about this. with the second book it was difficult i sat down and didn't know what i was going to write for about 6 months. which was fearful for me because of the fact i knew i didn't have the second book. steven's story, i asked myself questions. a lot of writers do that that's usually how i begin. what did he do? who did he meet when he got off the train? who was this man servant? what was his life about? it all began with the seeds and the particular questions, as simple as that. although, then, i had to answer them. what i had done is i usual low don't work with an out line. a lot of writers do they will out line what will happen and sometimes they have to because like if you are writing a mystery you need to write out the plot. i write about characters the characters drive the

big, bold letters it read things like various newspapers read the same thing, taggers shoot two church goers. tagging suspect shoots church goers. but when you go into the article and read the whole account of the incident, it's reported these are gang members and these are gangsters putting up gang gravanis. but when people read this stuff in the paper, that's where they are getting their input. they have never had any training and it starts to blur the line. what's a tagger, are they all gangsters, do gangsters tag, and sometimes the jury is going to have that in your head when they listen to your case so you need to clear that up so they know exactly where you are coming from when you are doing a case. so over the years we developed 5 types of gravanis. now there are a lot of ways to categorize gravanis. you might be looking historically and looking at old school new school stuff, geographically, east coast versus west coast stuff, but this is easy to articulate in court and we can explain exactly what we've got and what we haven't got. we're going to talk about each one of these in
