( rebecca @ land ) 43-year-old lawyer mcbride was arrested yesterday after someone told police they spotted him at a fast food restaurant in sacramento. he is accused of shooting and killing 29-year-old rashanda franklin in richmond on tuesday. this isn't the first time mcbride has been in trouble with the law. back in 19-92 he was arrested for attempted murder for shooting a 16-year-old near pinole valley high school. police say he has an extensive criminal history and is now facing murder charges. rebecca, you have your sources on capitol hill also. talk to me about the pressure within the republican caucus to get something, anything, done over the next couple weeks. >> well, it's some very acute pressure, john, from the white house, from outside the white house in terms of these republican constituents clamoring for some sort of deal, and the pressure is really on the house freedom caucus at this point. one of the greatest signals of this, i think, has been the way chairman mark meadows, chairman of the freedom caucus, has been talking about health care over the past week or so. last week when he was home in north carolina, he gave an interview to a local radio station and said he thought something had to happen on health care within the first 100 days, that this was alive. he stressed that discussions were ongoing with the vice president and with leadership, and so, he's been signaling that this is very much still in progress. the house freedom caucus just doesn't want to be saddled with the blame for this, and after the bill f

let me start with rebecca on this. hard power versus soft power. we're seeing some moves by the united states when it comes to hard power. has anything changed in terms of what was formally believed to be say soft power is still better at this moment? >> soft power and hard power go together. so right now one of the most important things is we have very close military cooperation with south korea. as you know, we have u.s. air forces and army forces there. it's a combined command and so a lot of what we've seen is hards power reinforcing the soft power. the movement of the "vinson" strike group. we deployed initial elements of the terminal high altitude interceptor to korea. >> so you just well-described, rebecca, for us, the hard-powered element. the soft-powered element is the question. do we have the troops and lack of an ambassador, you don't have that balance, then. it's really a hard-power move if you look at that assessment. >> i think you're right. what we want to see is more soft power. we need an ambassador in south korea. we need to get

for more on this, i'm joined by rebecca grant and also mark ginsburg., we'll start with you on this. rex tillerson the right person to be there and what can he get out of russia? >> well, the fact is that he's on his way and he's trying to get the g-7 countries aligned with a better approach collectively to try to deal with russia on syria. but what is lost in the equation here, is that while mr. tillerson is on his way to russia, the fact is that russia is really interested in assad to three reasons. their military bases on the mediterranean, the fact that russia was the largest exporter of arms to syria and made most of its foreign currency off of those sales, and number three, because heepresents ahiite bullwark against sunni terrorism. the real culprit here unusual to russia is iran. iran has a far greater vested interest in assad's longevity than russia. >> and on that note, they had a joint statement coming from iran today, coming from hezbollah on this very issue against the united states. and to you on that, rebecca, has that congealed, if you w

rebecca, did president trump surround himself with dodgey people? >> donald trump has said that carter page, for example, was not a top aide, he wasn't close to the campaign. you have sean spicer going out there and saying paul manafort was nothing more than a volunteer for the campaign and not an important player even at the same time he was campaign manager. you have wonder how influential were these people in the circle? have to think paul manafort had great influence in the trump organization. carter page maybe not as influential. then donald trump mentioning his name second in a list of foreign policy advisers in an interview with the "washington post" editorial board over the summer so you have to wonder why these inconsistencies with their stories. but certainly they had some influence in the campaign and it does go back to the judgment of the chief executive of the candidate, and now the president, why did he pick these people to work for him? we haven't really had a good explanation from donald trump or any of his top advisers as to what qu
